Bad narrator

The book is very good and helpful but suffers greatly from bad narration. The narrator has a monotone voice and often puts emphasis on the wrong part of the sentence, a minor annoyance at first but increasingly so later on.

Excellent material for families and others

A very good source of information for anyone with a family member, friend or colleague with schizophrenia. I would highly recommend listening to the book or reading it.
Note that due to the way it is narrated, it is often difficult to follow when a new paragraph or heading starts, but one gets used to it.
I will be looking for an additional book for more guidance on how to assist a patient with anosognosia (being unaware of the illness).

Excellent book

Really the best book I have found for learning about and how to help people with Schizophrenia.

I had left a previous review saying half the book was missing, but after contacting Audible the resolved the issue and now the complete book is available.

Validation and understanding

I am a wife of three young kids whose spouse became schizophrenic just two years ago. I found so many aspects of this book useful and will be using information I learned about in this book to help get the medical, financial, and emotional support i and families living with loved ones of this condition so greatly need. I also appreciate his presentation of the history of the condition, treatment changes. I like his humor when appropriate, his ability to make you feel understood/validated and as though we have some advocates on our side.

Everyone in society should read…

Particularly those who are close up and engaged with a person who struggles with schizophrenia or other thought disorders. This book both offered me hope, imposed the reality of caregiving for a family member diagnosed with a formal thought disorder, and also made me mad to know how society stigmatizes this and other types of mental illnesses. Many people with this brain disease can be helped, but the process to gain that help is both expensive (sad state of pharmaceutical expenses for NO reason), and is short of advocates who really understand those who suffer and how to help them. It is a mad circle! My close family member will need advocacy from a lifelong perspective. And the stigma of this disease is often incorrectly portrayed by those who are untouched by anyone they know who suffers. No knowledge, no compassion. I honestly feel the only way to grasp the very reality of this disease is to experience it in oneself, or to advocate for someone who is experiencing it. Reading material like this is a first step toward gaining some understanding, yes, but it takes someone with compassion to understand the plight of formal thought disorder to break the stigma.

Best understanding of Schizophrenia in detail

My new boyfriend told me he had schizophrenia, I asked him questions with little expectations form him. With learning more from this book my understanding, and previous criticisms of him changed us. His comfort level increased with each Conversation we had about his condition.
