Publisher's summary

Sex is at the core of our identities. And when it becomes a compulsion, it can unravel our lives. Out of the Shadows is the premier work on this disorder, written by a pioneer in its treatment. Revised and updated to include the latest research - and to address the exploding phenomenon of cybersex addiction - this third edition identifies the danger signs, explains the dynamics, and describes the consequences of sexual addiction and dependency. With practical wisdom and spiritual clarity, it points the way out of the shadows of sexual compulsion and back into the light and fullness of life.

WOW!

One line in this book that shifted everything I thought I knew...

“Men objectify women because it is easier to be rejected by an object than by a person.”

Eye opening

Honest, blunt, and non judgemental.
Was recommended to read by therapist. Reading took me down a path of self review and realisation that an uncomfortable number of items pertained to myself. Instead of disrepair the book shows the path of recovery and hope.

It’s a tough read.

If you’re someone whose thinking about reading this, know it’s rough. Not necessarily because you’ll see yourself in it, but because there are stories of child molestation. It is an insightful book though.

Much Needed Eye Opener

I was struggling with addiction and trying to overcome it blindly. After my wife told me I needed to read it I did. It helped me see my problem in ways I hadn't seen it before which allowed me to address many issues and confront many problems. I have listened to this 2 times and read the book once. Through this book I also realized the importance of 12 steps. Invaluable. wish I discovered it sooner.

Excellent discussion on sex addiction

Patrick Carnes is one of the leading experts on sex addiction and the family. As a former therapist that treated sex addiction I highly recommend this book to both the addict and family member. It’s a good book for anyone struggling with any addiction to read for help with a deeper look into addiction and recovery.

excellent presentation

this book helps those struggling with sexual addiction and the people in their lives who care about them. It also encourages empathy and understanding for social workers and those who do not understand this crippling condition.
