Publisher's summary

Are you looking to be part of the solar revolution? Are you just looking to save some power on your electricity bills? This book could be the answer you're looking for....

As a person who had to survive a hurricane or two, I can officially tell you that one of the best reasons to make your own off-the-grid solar power system is simply to have electricity when other people don't. Because you are the one that is monitoring and providing maintenance on your specific grid, this means that the likelihood of a random power outage is very unlikely, unless one of your solar panels is shattered by some unknown force.

In a giant power grid that connects wires that traverse tens to even hundreds of miles, practically anything can go wrong. A transformer could blow, a power line could be knocked down, one of the wires could snap and come loose, etc. Any number of things can go wrong. When an electric company must find a problem, first they narrow the problem to specific sections of the grid, then they manually inspect all of the individual poles and lines in that section to find the problem. Locating and fixing the issue can take a long time depending on where it originates.

On the other hand, because your solar grid is typically located on your property, if you notice that you are starting to lose power you can easily detect it through monitoring, and then find the source of the problem within a relatively small area. In your system, all you have to do is simply look at the wires that are connecting to your battery packs, and see which one might be causing the problem. Then, if the wires all check out, you just look at the solar panels themselves to see if any of them have broken or if something happened to them inside of their cases. Finally, you can then check the charge controller to see if it got hit with a surge of power, or you can check one of the many surge protectors that you have laying around the house, so that you don't fry your devices. In other words, whenever you do experience a power outage you know the exact reason why you are experiencing it, and you are busy fixing it rather than having to wait for somebody else to fix it.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • Benefits of off-grid solar

Great book

I observed this to be an entirely oversimplified review of photovoltaic (sunlight based) frameworks. It's anything but difficult to take after, nearly to a blame. There were places that I wound up needing more point by point data, yet for a tenderfoot, or an examination nut like myself, this is an incredible place to begin. The creator broadly expounds on numerous parts of the framework, including a few regions where I couldn't help contradicting him - batteries, for instance. He says that nickel-cadmium batteries 'appear like a decent decision for generally people...'. I differ essentially in view of the harmfulness and absence of reusing areas, things which he mentions.

As I stated, I think this is a decent beginning stage for individuals who are considering sun based, and don't know much about the frameworks parts that make up the framework.

A wonderful introduction to off-grid solar

I was never that familiar with the concept of off-grid solar and thought it was time to learn something. This audio book was a great introduction for someone like me. I listened to the book twice to be sure I understood everything I needed to. My next step is to find out if off-grid solar is right for me.

This is an info packed little read!

I now know more about batteries than I think I ever wanted to know lol. This short read was jam packed with info and a recommend giving this a listen as well as watching some videos on YouTube if you’re planning on starting your own solar grid. Who knew there were so many options?!

Husband loved it

This gave my husband some really great tips and he instantly began building our solar panels system. He said definitely get this book if you are looking to go solar too!

I received this book for free in exchange for a honest review

The narrator was very clear and kept my interest.

This book has good information on the components of a solar panel system for your house. It describes the hybrid solar connection to your local utilities and complete grid concepts. I'm pretty good with electronics and it's lingo, I would think that someone without a clue about serial or parallel circuits would be lost. Overall the author has compiled a good amount of information. I would add to this notation, "There's more information out there in a field that is constantly changing and being developed." The information seems good, but it's not a step by step. As the author says it all depends on your needs and every set up is different.

Off Grid Solar

This is a very informative book. It stays at a very basic, beginners level and builds so that the audience is able to follow no matter the knowledge level. The author give great information and allows he audience to make their own decisions on weather dolor energy is something that they would like to try.

I liked the scaffolding of information for every level of background knowledge. The speaker is articulate and concise, going at a pace that a beginner can follow with very little problems. The only criticism I have is that the speaker slowly becomes almost monotone at times.

Overall this is a good source of information and a great way for a beginner to start researching how to build their own system.

Great content, How to audio is hard.

This is my first audible book. I have used a lot of audio books in the past, mostly for non fiction. I will say that is hard to do audio books for DIY material, but this one did okay at it. To be honest, I would have loved this as an eBook or a paper copy. The material is good and fits with my experiences as a DIY solar enthusiast.

As a Southern American the Narrators accent was very hard to follow. It did not take away from the quality of the material but the performance occasionally caused me to have to back up and repeat a phrase or two.

All and All for the price you really can't beat the content.

Science

I've always been into science and love learning about it. This book teaches you about the science of going solar and how to build your own solar panel system. It also tells you how you don't have to exactly give your arm and leg to afford going solar.
