Editorial reviews

Winner of multiple awards including AudioFile Best Voice in 2008, narrator Richard Allen performs with great credibility and sincerity as he describes Dr. William Walsh's science-based nutrient therapy system for people with mental disorders such as depression and schizophrenia. Dr. Walsh proposes that addressing the body's underlying biochemical imbalances is more effective than treating symptoms with psychiatric drugs, and he emphasizes the necessity of investigating the causal factors for each individual. Allen's resonant voice underscores the significance of Dr. Walsh's aim to achieve true normalization of the brain.

Publisher's summary

Psychiatry has made great advances in the past 50 years but needs a new direction. Today's emphasis on psychiatric drugs will not stand the test of time. Recent advances in epigenetics and the molecular biology of the brain have provided a roadmap for the development of effective, natural, drug-free therapies that do not produce serious side effects. Psychiatric medications have served society well over the last 50 years, but the need for drug therapies will fade away as science advances.

Nutrient Power presents a science-based nutrient therapy system that can help millions of people diagnosed with mental disorders. This approach recognizes that nutrient imbalances can alter brain levels of key neurotransmitters, disrupt gene expression of proteins and enzymes, and cripple the body's protection against environmental toxins. The author's database containing millions of chemical factors in blood, urine, and tissues has identified brain-changing nutrient imbalances in patients diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, behavior disorders, depression, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disease.

This book describes individualized nutrient therapy treatments that have produced thousands of reports of recovery. Walsh's approach is more scientific than the trial-and-error use of psychiatric drugs and is aimed at a true normalization of the brain. Depression, schizophrenia, and ADHD are umbrella terms that encompass disorders with widely differing brain chemistries and symptoms. Nutrient Power describes nutrient therapies tailored to specific types. Other book highlights include the Walsh Theory of Schizophrenia, a new way to look at autism, a promising new treatment for Alzheimer's, and recommendations for reducing crime and violence.

This book saved my daughter.

What made the experience of listening to Nutrient Power the most enjoyable?

This book not only shows the scientific evidence that psychiatric drugs only treat the problem, just the symptoms, but also explains how nutrients can really fix the problem, which problems are quickly to fix (like pyrroluria) and which are harder to fix (such as autism).

What was one of the most memorable moments of Nutrient Power?

There are several small sample cases which describe real people who got cured. This makes me think my daughter could be listed there.

What about Richard Allen’s performance did you like?

The narrator lacks in emotion, but yet the book is fascinating.

Any additional comments?

I had a bottle of anti-psychotic drug depakote in my hands, prescribed for my 2 year old girl. But because of this book I got the direction to cure her, read other books, and despite the lack of resources on the subject (I live in Brazil), I did it successfully. Nutrients did not just cure her mind and behavior, but her health also. Before, she had been admitted to hospital several times, including being in intensive care unit 3 times, but after nutrient therapy that has never happened anymore. She is now a very happy 4 year old girl, and I never opened the depakote bottle.

Not for Novices

The content of this book is great, but it is very technical at times. If you are not familiar with medical and scientific terminology, this book might be a little difficult for you to listen to.

The reader takes a while to get used to as his voice is monotone. After an hour, you get used to it though.

I would recommend this book for those interested in improving the health and quality of their own life and the lives of loved ones.

Extremely compelling science with bad narration

While this book is so compelling to me that I've gone back to it over the years, but every time I listen to it, the narrator's sing-song voice drives me crazy. There is nothing natural about the reading whatsoever, and it nearly causes me to miss the point of what's being said or to discern it as non-chalantly as the reader seems to intend it. If you want to understand this book as seriously as the writer intended, do yourself a favor and read the hard-copy for yourself. This guy's voice is better intended for children's books than for science topics.

This book transformed my view of mental illness

I am a Licensed counselor. I am amazed at the science behind targeted nutrition and find myself frustrated as to why this was never mentioned in any graduate studies.

I am now enthusiastic about finding a way to integrate nutrition therapy into my group practice.

Excellent and Appreciated

I highly recommend this book to everyone as general reading and knowledge, and specifically to psychologists, counselors and psychiatrists. Also, I would highly recommend this book and knowledge to anyone with symptoms of a mental disorder, autism, or Alzheimer’s or if one has a family member with any of these conditions. I love the successful nutritional approach Dr Walsh so succinctly describes and a healthy natural alternative to pharmaceutical medications.

Presents links between nutrition and mental health,but...

...no ‘actionable’ information. It provides, in a very dry manner, some study results that demonstrate correlation between certain supplements (or lack thereof) and certain brain/behavior conditions. But there are no recommended courses of self-directed therapy.

Important Info, challenging listening

Any additional comments?

Import info for people with many different kinds of mental/emotional challenges. Worth checking out. Would have rated it a 5, but had audio version and I found the narrator's voice difficult to listen to. Eventually, I did get used to the odd inflection and tonation.

Powerful Information for Difficult Diseases

Dr. Walsh's research is invaluable in treating patient's with mental, emotional, and other illnesses such as Autism with biochemical protocols and also is complex and difficult to understand, but his classification and amazing success with so many patient's is heartwarming, and brings hope to those who may have had no hope in the past. I appreciate the book very much.
