Publisher's summary

Reed Timmer is one of the most successful and most extreme storm chasers in the world. His is a job that requires science and bravado, knowledge and instinct just to survive, never mind excel. It's a job some people would kill for. But most prefer to let Timmer take the risks while they watch from the safety of their homes.

Reed Timmer is a star of Storm Chasers, one of the Discovery Channel's top-rated shows. Into the Storm is Timmer's dramatic account of his extraordinary profession. Each chapter features the story of one of the 300-plus extreme tornadoes, hurricanes, or blizzards that Timmer has intercepted over the last decade - storms that include the killer F5 tornado that struck Moore, Oklahoma, in May 1999; the unprecedented, devastating storm surge of Hurricane Katrina; and the little-studied but enormously powerful storm systems in places like Canada and Argentina, including a recent trip in which Timmer realized he was the only storm chaser in South America and was able to intercept super cells in the most prolific hail-producing region in the world.

As a Ph.D. candidate in meteorology, Timmer is after more than just an adrenaline rush - his stories feature fascinating insights into the science of storms and how the data he is collecting will someday save lives. With a firsthand perspective on the storm-chasing community, Timmer also takes listeners inside this world, examining his controversial obsession and the ethical debates it sparks.

Featuring the same you-are-there immediacy that attracts more than 100,000 visitors to Timmer's Web site every month, Into the Storm is one wild - and informative - ride.

Perfect for Reed Timmer Fans!

It’s a nice book about Reeds beginnings in the storm chasing business and does a good job with explaining weather terminology and describing things you see in the tv shows. I hope he writes another book as I found this one enjoyable! The narrator does a good job. Nothing outstanding but never annoying.

Never stop chasing...

I'm a weather nerd so it was great fun to read about one of the storm chasers I've watched on TV & YouTube. Tho it was a little weird to hear Reed's point of view in another voice. Not that the narrorator's voice was bad in any way. He did an excellent job even if to me he sounded more like Skip Talbot (another chaser I watch)! I've just been watching Reed chase for years & listening to him talk about the science of reading radars or excitedly yell out "TORNADO! BIIIIIG TORNADO!" so it was a bit odd until I got over it.
The scence of meterology has come really far since this book was published but it was still interesting to hear of Reed's "chaser-genesis" & how what he did in those early days helped shape some of the advancements in understanding what causes those terrible, beautiful storms.

Loved it

This book was very informative about reeds storm chasing life. I found it very easy to follow the story without a weather type background. I was a little disappointed he didn’t talk more about his time with discovery channel, but we can watch it on tv :) overall I really enjoyed this book.

Might have been good but....

If it weren't for the feeling that I got that Mr. Timmer lacks common sense, it could have been a good read. It is one thing to put himself in the path of great peril but he choose far too often to take others with him. I do understand that storm chasing does put a person in danger but I felt that he takes far too many chances.

EXCELLENT!

This is a fascinating look into the exciting field/hobby of storm chasing. Reed Timmer is a well known name in the Storm Chasing community, and this book does a great job of giving him a face beyond the TV shows he appears on. Excellent book and well worth the money!

If you enjoyed the show you will might like this.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If my friend was interested in more of the meteorological elements of storm chasing this is the right book. There are some good behind the scenes descriptions and some more personal information.

Any additional comments?

I say MIGHT in the heading because there are many times throughout the book that the science takes over. The reading is traditional Reed Timmer and is pretty flat throughout. If you want a book to pass the time and perhaps pick up some useful information this is the listen for you.

insight into why they do it.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a storm chaser.

Any additional comments?

It was an interesting read and kept my attention. Give some background as to why they storm chase. Gave some very helpful hints as to what to expect during and after a Tornado. Not full of techno babble and easy to understand.
