Publisher's Summary

The American Black Bear is far from the docile, friendly creature often depicted in TV and movies. While it's able to live beside people when it's borders and boundaries are respected, events take a far different turn when those boundaries are crossed by bears - or man. In Encounter: The Black Bear and Man, naturalist, outdoorsman and hunter Carl Semencic, author of Gladiator Dogs, explores those encounters, the tragedies that result and how education and respect leads to better outcomes for everyone, bear and man alike.

What other book might you compare Encounter to and why?

The book reminds me of Omnivores Dilemma where author Micheal Pollan joins other outdoorsmen.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The story of a father confronting a black bear attempting to drag his son down an embankment.

Any additional comments?

I learned from the book that most black bear attacks are triggered by dogs, and I have two of them. Thanks to Carl, I'll be prepared now.
