Apart from being painful and embarrassing, Ulcerative Colitis can severely disrupt a sufferer's life. Part of the intestine becomes inflamed and develops ulcers leading to the colon becoming inflamed preventing water from being absorbed resulting in symptoms including intense diarrhoea, cramps, abdominal pain, illness, and most worryingly bowel incontinence. There are about 90,000 sufferers in the UK and this is the first book which focuses in Ulcerative Colitis alone. It provides clear and accessible information about this disorder and explains how to reduce its effects on daily life and outlines the developments in its treatment.
"A superb...book, full of useful information presented in a clear and attractive style." (Mr Roy Maxwell, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast)

This is obviously a book for someone who wants to know about the disease, ulcerative colitis. I found it to be straight forward and informative. It gives a very good overview of what is known about this disease.
The topics range from talking about possible causes including some statistics, different treatments, nutrition, practical advice about how to cope with this very socially awkward condition, special situations and a lot more. I found the scattering of anecdotal experiences to be very informative and helpful.
Personally I found the information in the book to leave me feeling a lot more hopeful and even feeling empowered about living with this disease
The book is written by someone in the UK, so there are a few odd words used. The narrator has a strong English accent, which for me made the book much easier to listen to. Her delivery of the material was done well. The material itself is presented in a very easy to understand way.
If you or someone close to you gets an ulcerative colitis diagnosis, this book is definitely worth the time and credit.
