The Programming Expert Next Door

Where does C# Programming Bootcamp rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is easily one of the best beginner programming books that have been converted to the audiobook format.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There are no characters in this book. It is a C# Programming book. Well, I guess that technically the character is you, and in that case the character is quite well developed and easy to identify with. :P

What about Mike Hennessy’s performance did you like?

The narrator is easily the best feature of this audiobook. While the material is perfectly suited for beginning programmers like myself, the narration has a familiar quality that gives it a professorial tone, while making it feel like that professor is also your next door neighbor, who has generously decided to help guide you through your first steps into the world of C# computer programming.

Mike's tone is gentle but firm, and is very smooth. His cadence has a comforting familiarity, while also motivating you to pay attention and follow along. I found it very easy to follow along with his narration, as it wasn't too slow to lose focus, and not too fast to get lost. His annunciation is clear and crisp. There are no muffled sounds, no air pauses that cause confusion, and his pronunciations are right on target. Not once did I misunderstand anything that was being said.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from C# Programming Bootcamp?

The book has helped me take my first steps in C# programming. I'm hoping it will help me go on to bigger and better things.

Any additional comments?

I highly recommend this book for C# beginners. The step by step instructions are methodical and easy to follow, while the narration makes those instructions clear, concise, and more apt to stick with you. Excellent tutorial, with top notch narration. A+.

Nice try for a C# reference book

This boog is a good reference for the C# syntax, data types and operators. If it was for C# only, it would be good. The last third of the book is for Python. I would prefer to know in advance that the Python was included.

Reading code out loud doesn't work.

What disappointed you about C# Programming Bootcamp?

I was hoping for descriptions of concepts, but what stood out was the code examples read out loud. It's just not workable - you can't get an idea of how code works when it's read out loud word by word, characters, symbols, punctuation and newlines included. The structure is lost and it's pointless.
I was also disappointed that the book was not over 2 hours as advertised, but only an hour. The rest was made up of 'free books' I neither expected nor wanted.

Would you ever listen to anything by David Maxwell again?

No, I think audio programming books are a bad idea. I'll stick to visual books for code from now on.

Would you be willing to try another one of Mike Hennessy’s performances?

Not if it's an audio book for a programming language.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from C# Programming Bootcamp?

I'd cut the code - it just doesn't work; concept description is fine but code examples don't in an audio book.

Any additional comments?

If a book is 62 minutes long with 2 supposedly free books included in the price, don't advertise it as being the length of all 3 books. It's misleading and falsely gives the impression that the book is longer and, in this case more useful, than it actually is. If I'd have known the truth I'd have bought something else; I have no need of free python books, I have 4 print copies.

Switched to Python 1/2 way through

The audio book is not all on c# as advertised. It switches to Python half way through. It was just getting to the interesting bits. Disappointed.
