Publisher's summary

During an apocalyptic battle against murderous machines and hardened soldiers, a lone salvage marine turns the tide with a devastating counterattack. Having revealed herself as a consummate warrior, Jada Sek is welcomed into the ranks of the Dire Swords, an elite fighting force loyal only to the contract. As the other marines return to their salvage duties, Jada and her new comrades, each as haunted by the ghosts of their past as she is, plunge yet further into necrospace. They are repeatedly deployed to disrupt and destroy the endeavors of corporate competitors and along the way discover that the enigma of the machine race is more sinister and complex than any imagined.

Surrounded by the specters of an ancient holocaust and forced to face her inner conflict, Jada must make a choice. When the money ceases to matter, when surviving loses its significance, and the thrill of taking the fight right into the teeth of the enemy seems like the only truth left in this scrapyard of a universe, it is time to let the marine die so that the mercenary can be born.

Book 4

I was a little bit lost and confused because I did not have the previous books in the series. But all in all it was a good audiobook to listen to

good action, meh story, great narration

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

As this is the 4th book, and I hadn't listened to (or read) the first 3, it took a while to get into the story and understand what was going on. Turns out, it's pretty much just fighting. I mean, there is a small amount of conflict within the main character, but it's pretty much just an intergalactic war... Persephone Rose did a great job on the narration and the action was good. All in all, it was definitely entertaining, just nothing to write home about.

Nonstop action ‘

Well written, but could’ve use viewpoints from other characters along with quotes. There was some, but more would’ve been good.
The “S” rating was so nondescript, it could have gone I acknowledged.
Because of war type violence this would be recommended for 17 or older listeners.

I was given this audiobook for free, and I freely give my rating and opinion.

I will definitely listen to this again

The story is very good. I haven’t heard or read the other books and I was able to understand it. If you don’t read sci fi a lot, it might be tough for you though. The narrator is awesome. If this is an example of the whole series, I’m definitely going to listen to them all .

Why change narrator mid-series?

Simply the wrong choice of voice for this story. Kafer or Bray is perfect for this type of military sci-fi story. In comparison. the current narrator has the vocal characterizations reminiscent of the old AT&T Adam synthesized voice. Think WOPR’s “Want to play a game?”

Great story, bad narrator

It took me longer to get through this one. The story is a fantastic continuation with focus on Jada. Great story, great characters. Unfortunately they have a new narrator who is great at the action and men’s narration but simply ridiculous sounding as Jada. When he speaks as her she sounds idiotic and insecure which sharply contrasts the narration of her thoughts and action around her. Being that the story is all about her it would have been nice if they’d had a woman narrate or someone with a better range for female characters. Wish I’d read the paper copy instead.

Nonstop action

I received this audiobook for free from the author / narrator / publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.

I had received the fourth book of this series and hadn't listened to the previous 3 books. Thus, I was thrown directly into the middle of a war and couldn't quite make sense of what was happening. This book of full of action from start to end. Pretty much the entire duration is spent on war sequences and very little time is spent on anything else like character nuances or life outside the fight. If you like bombastic action sequences, you might like this one.

I guess if I read the earlier installments, I might appreciate this one more.

The narrator did a good enough job. No complains there.
