Publisher's summary

When the unthinkable happens, not everyone is ready. Not everyone knows what to do.

It is a very rare occasion that Abby Miller travels into the city, but an errand that can only be done in town prompts her to make it a girls' day out with her two daughters. Unfortunately, the day is far from perfect and they are in the worst place possible when nuclear war strikes … ground zero.

Lacking any survival knowledge, she finds herself in the shelter of the city's Liberty Tunnels with a group of strangers, none of which know much more than she does. The odds are against them. Panic, hunger, and sickness are rampant. The tunnels increasingly become more dangerous. With limited skills, Abby must pull it together, not only get her and the girls out of the tunnel shelter, but to survive long enough to make it home one last time.

Great story, happy, sad, suspenseful.

Would you listen to When the Ashes Fall again? Why?

Yes, I would listen to When the Ashes Fall again, in fact I have already re-listened to the ending. The author does a great job of bringing the different characters to life and endearing them to you. I enjoyed that the story was about a terrible situation that this family struggled through and it brought out the best in each of them.

What was one of the most memorable moments of When the Ashes Fall?

I really liked the ending, it was happy and sad. It was a real ending, it wasn't a good situation and it was never going to be a good ending, but it was the best ending this family could have.

Have you listened to any of Laura Bretz’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I really enjoyed Laura Bretz's performance and have already looked her up to get more books she has narrated. She has a calm soothing voice and she did each of the characters justice.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I don't know, but I would sure go see it.

OK book

It kept me entertained enough to keep listening. It wasn't the best book I've read, but it wasn't the worst.

Hmmmm

When I finished the book the only thing I thought was what an odd story. A bit unbelievable but in these days anything's possible. The narrator was excellent I liked her voice. I also liked the characters but the storyline was a bit far-fetched.

meh

I thought this listen was very luke warm. Had no problem accepting the premise. The main character was difficult for me to endure. She's a very loving mother concerned about the safety and security of her children but she is pretty clueless. Overall, it wasn't a bad way to kill time but it certainly wasn't a thrill either.

This is why I opt out of a cataclysmic event

This is a very good book in it's genre. It was easy to sense how this event came about. I loved the book and highly recommend it. Now for the obligatory: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.
