Publisher's Summary

A masterful tale of ambition, jealousy, desire, and superpowers.
Victor and Eli started out as college roommates - brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.
Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), and aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find - aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the arch nemeses have set a course for revenge - but who will be left alive at the end? In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn’t automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question.

Wow

Where does Vicious rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's probably the second best book I've listened to. Firefight was the best - a book with similar subject matter, but much different story, tone, and pacing.

What did you like best about this story?

How it stars two very different kinds of sociopathic main characters. And oh my god those last chapters leading up to midnight - anticipation built up so well and the midnight fight so, so, lives up to all of it. Pretty creative superpowers, particularly Serena's. I also like how both Victor and Eli's powers were explored so far, as a lesser story wouldn't have thought of that many creative uses/ limitations of the one power.

Have you listened to any of Noah Michael Levine’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Nope.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me really excited and happy when I finished it. It felt like the kind of story I'd come up with.

Any additional comments?

Okay, so, yes, I loved this book, however: when I first started listening to it, I hated it, and couldn't follow anything going on, since I went into the book pretty blind.

I didn't really know what it was about, save for the briefest of summaries that didn't cover more than "the two main characters used to be friends, but now they're enemies. Also, superpowers."

To get the full experience of this book, do read a little bit about the plot and structure it's written in, or it could be confusing and frustrating. This story jumps around in the timeline practically every chapter which makes the focus unclear. So, do read a more in depth description of this book before just diving in, as the structure can be frustrating to follow.

A superhuman novel that isn't strictly YA.

Tired of superhero books that pander to a demographic too young to drink? Looking for a story about superhumans that's more like an action revenge flick than a coming of age story? Than this is the book for you.
