Publisher's summary

From the national best-selling author of Jeweled Fire.

In the latest novel in Sharon Shinn's Elemental Blessings series, a woman is confronted with the past she left behind - and an uncertain future.

Leah Frothen has returned home to rebuild the life she's avoided for years. But she can scarcely catch her breath before she is summoned to meet with the regent, Darien Serlast, the man who made her a spy. Leah is reluctant to take on a new assignment, but Darien has dangled the perfect lure to draw her in.

Leah finds she enjoys the challenges of opening a shop catering to foreign visitors, especially since it affords her the opportunity to get to know Mally, the child she abandoned five years ago. Leah is simultaneously thrilled, terrified, hopeful, moved, and almost undone as she slowly attempts to become part of her daughter's life.

But when the regent asks her to spy on ambassadors from a visiting nation, she develops a dangerous friendship with a foreign woman and finds herself falling in love with a man from her past. Soon Leah learns that everyone - her regent, her lover, and even her daughter - has secrets that could save the nation, but might very well break her heart.

Outstanding

I totally love this series. It is a fun set of books to listen to. I was so happy when she came out with more books in the series and I hope she has more she will write. I want to know more about all the characters and see how Mally grows up. I would definitely tell you to read this series of books. Can't wait for the next one.

More of the same

I enjoy this series. Nothing mind blowing or overly original, but enjoyable. It is starting to be a bit predictable though, her last book in the series was better.

Another Great Book

I have been following Sharon Shinn since the first Angel novel. She never fails to write an enjoyable, thoughtful and interesting story. I become attached to her characters and feel like I know them. Her women use their power for the good of all. They are courageous and learn from their mistakes. Jennifer Van Dyck's narration is the icing on the cake. The elemental blessings series meets her high standards and I can't wait for the next one in the series.

Captivating

I can't wait to read the next book in the elemental series. Maybe more adventures with Leah and Chandrin.

Worthy sequel to a great series

Sharon Shinn is a master (mistress? -:) ) at creating delightful, complex and well-developed worlds. The narrator seems to be a perfect fit. There seems to be a kind of closure at the end of this book, but I hope to be pleasantly surprised by another volume.

Disappointed in this particular one in the series

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

More action and adventure, and less politics and slow pace.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Predictable.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I didn't mind most of the voices, and in fact, she is good. I just didn't like the voice of the lead's love interest. It did not at all sound appealing. Personal, I know, but there we are.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It was part of a very good series, which up until now has been quite lively and full of different things happening. It felt like a background novel to the real action going on.

Any additional comments?

The lead's love interest was particularly unappealing and never engaged my own interest. The description, and sound of his voice, and involvement in plot were unpleasant and I felt disappointed.
