Publisher's Summary

Paula Brackston transports listeners to the windswept mountains of Wales in this enthralling tale of love and magic.
In her small early-19th-century Welsh town, there is no one quite like Morgana. She is small and quick, and pretty enough to attract a suitor, but there are things that set her apart from other girls. Though her mind is sharp she has not spoken since she was a young girl. Her silence is a mystery, as well as her magic - the household objects that seem to move at her command, the bad luck that visits those who do her ill.
Concerned for her safety, her mother is anxious to see Morgana married, and Cai Jenkins, the widowed drover from the far hills who knows nothing of the rumors that swirl around her, seems the best choice. After her wedding, Morgana is heartbroken at leaving her mother, and wary of this man, whom she does not know, and who will take her away to begin a new life.
But she soon falls in love with Cai's farm and the wild mountains that surround it. Here, where frail humans are at the mercy of the elements, she thrives, her wild nature and her magic blossoming. Cai works to understand the beautiful, half-tamed creature he has chosen for a bride, and slowly, he begins to win Morgana's affections. It's not long, however, before her strangeness begins to be remarked upon in her new village.
A dark force is at work there - a person who will stop at nothing to turn the townspeople against Morgana, even at the expense of those closest to her. Forced to defend her home, her man, and herself from all comers, Morgana must learn to harness her power, or she will lose everything in this beautifully written, enchanting novel.

The theme which winds it's way through the story is the manner in which outsiders, indeed anybody different to those indigenous to a place, can be ill treated. The novel is set in nineteenth century rural Wales, and deals with a young woman who is ignorant of the fact that she is a fledgling witch. I cannot say more as it would spoil the book for anybody listening to it for the first time.
The narration is excellent. There are two voices which take the listener through the story, one Welsh and one English. I, for one, could not discern which is the narrator's actual accent, if either.
If you like historical fiction with a dash of the supernatural, then I cannot recommend this book enough. Those new to the genre may find it a touch strange and difficult in places, but it is well worth persisting through the more unusual scenes.

A gripping tale

Where does The Winter Witch rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have acquired several books but I found this one totally gripping, more so than the others.

What did you like best about this story?

The tale is set in south Wales and features the problems encountered by a young woman adjusting to a new life whilst simultaneously coming to terms with growing up and leaving home as a new bride. The story is magnificently told with the author giving sufficient descriptive narrative to enable the listener to bring the tale to life. The choice of Marisa Calin to narrate this book was inspired, her accent was perfectly suited to the content. She doesn't have quite the range of other narrators but this is real nitpicking as when I looked for my next book, I searched for one narrated by her.

Have you listened to any of Marisa Calin’s other performances? How does this one compare?

This was the first book I heard narrated by Marisa Calin but when I chose my next novel I started by searching for the narrator and was thrilled to find another with the same author and narrator combination. I've just begun my next book and am very happy with my choice.

Light, easy read

Good easy story by Paula. Wish sometimes her books were a dvd series. Read this book in a day. I only gave this book 4 stars because it was just a really good read and quite light hearted.
But i recommend if you have read and liked her other books... not as twisty and turny as the others though.

I liked this read, love a bit of magic, the first one is still my favorite, but I really enjoyed this one too.
