Publisher's summary

Kaerion Whitehart was once a mighty paladin, but sins of the past have cast him far from the light. Together with an elf mercenary, he now survives by the might of his sword alone.

In exchange for a hefty purse, the two friends agree to accompany a band of patriots into a tomb haunted by fear and legend. They soon find the mission growing beyond their control. As warring factions vie for the ultimate prize of a long-dead wizard, Kaerion finds himself caught between death and redemption.

The Tomb of Horrors is the latest title in the Greyhawk Classics series, a set of novels that revisits the most popular adventures of the original Dungeons & Dragons game.

Warning Contains Spoilers of Cliched Plot Elements

I understand that the purpose of this whole series was to create novels around classic dungeon-crawl adventure modules, and that they have to work with some of the boring, predictable elements that were included in those modules, but this book was garbage, and not because of the original Tomb Of Horrors.

The fallen paladin literally cries and whines through the entire book, displaying not a single redeeming characteristic, occupying about 8 of the 12 hours of listening time with descriptions of what a lousy piece of crap he is, and then, the author having murdered everyone else off just has the hand of god step in, and make everything better. Now here, Have your magical super-sword back, and one-shot the remaining bad guys, we've got to wrap this up in about six minutes.

I've read better fan-fiction. written in sharpie. On truck stop men's room walls.

I’ve not read much fantasy fiction

Any additional comments?

Not being acquainted with fantasy fiction, other than J. R. R. Tolkien’s masterful works Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, I wouldn't know where to start. So picking something set in the World of Greyhawk that’s based on one of the greatest Dungeons & Dragons modules of all time seemed a good place to start.

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. My only criticism is it took a little long to establish the plot, taking away from time in the tomb, and it seemed to end abruptly. Although, if you think about it, that’s not much different from typical D&D campaign.

okay but kind of lame

I like the Justicar books but other than that this series was entirely pointless because this was not a series other than the justicar books it was more or less six different books that they just put together and called a series there's no overarching themes no connections to any of the other books except the Justicar books and there's no satisfying conclusion to the series because it was not a series

A great listen.

It was wonderful to hear a classic D&D adventure. I look forward to hearing more.

Is the Tomb of Horrors in this book?

Obviously, it is. But, the book is basically broken up into three parts and the characters enter the Tomb in the last third of the book.
The characters are meh at best. I didn't care if any of them lived or died honestly. they were flat, except for the Paladin. he does have a good, although very predictable, pay off at the end. But I still didn't care if he lived or died. No one else has a backstory and they are all flat NPC's. So what could possibly take up the first two thirds of the book? this:
PALADIN: boo hoo im a bad person and no one will understand why so i wont say anything (gets drunk alot)
BAD GUYS: we will rule the world
GOOD GUYS: we must get the riches for our kingdom salvation
BULLYWUGS: um..."San Dimas High School football rules.” (yes bullywugs are a major part of Tomb of Horros...bullywugs)

It's okay

The story barely followed the module, which was depressing. But the worst of it is the guy reading it. His voice is course, the intonation was grinding, and his iflection was grade school at best. He didn't help the book much at all

It takes 6 hours to get there…

The title should be The Long Boring Journey to The Tomb of Horrors. I listened to the others in this series and tried to slog out the last book but couldn’t. Go get the Paul Kidd books, they are great. This is completely skippable. Boring characters, boring story, doesn’t get to the Tomb until part 3. Meh. It had so much potential.

Fine

Reading through some of the other reviews and now having listened to the book, I fully understand the people that greatly disliked and the people that really liked it. This Book is very much the type that is going to appeal to some and definitely not to others. I know, the same can be said about anything, but this, at it's very core, is going to be divisive. I fall on the side that really didn't like it, but I can recognize that it isn't a bad book, it just isn't for me. The major thing I kept bumping into is that I kept feeling like it would be so much better to read these characters in a book not connected to D&D. To that end, I will be seeking books by this author not forced to exist in the confines of an old adventure module.

Light novel, good idea pool for new players

this is a pretty light novel that is read by a decent voice. The most annoying sections are when they swap to the villian, their drives are pretty shallow. as they go through their prep and dungeon crawl i think the story has a good pool of ideas for players...the care and use of a 10 foot pole.

would have love to see one of the characters accidentally wander into the gender swap portal.

takes a while to get going

overall, the story was pretty good (see headline), but the real shining star is the narrator. I first started with White Plume Mountain and honestly enjoy Paul(i) Kidd's writing a bit more. However, this isn't too much different. Fun read and walk through the ADND campaign. I am definitely going to check out the others.
