Publisher's summary

Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place.

Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries.

The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes. And it gives the listener a chance to learn things that only Auri knows....

In this book, Patrick Rothfuss brings us into the world of one of The Kingkiller Chronicle’s most enigmatic characters. Full of secrets and mysteries, The Slow Regard of Silent Things is the story of a broken girl trying to live in a broken world.

What an ego to read his own book!

Any additional comments?

With backing of publisher and huge fan to pay for a professional reader, choice to read his own book was a colossal mistake.

Most all writers are not good readers of their own book... Author has mediocre skills in reading his own book.

I tried a few times to listen to this book ...

We all make mistakes ... hope the author has learned, and does what he does best and let others do the same.

Excellent listen

Any additional comments?

Certainly an unorthodox story-ish thing, yet extremely pleasing and I believe very fitting for the character. As far as providing insights into a character and their motivations, this piece of work nailed it.

A Different Story

This isn't your normal story, as the author notes, but fitting of the main character. Interesting window into the world of a minor character.

Not a normal story, but so enjoyable.

If you could sum up The Slow Regard of Silent Things in three words, what would they be?

Unless you've read the two books before this, this book will make no sense to you. but it is a very fun insight into a small part of one character. It is a quirky little story that rambles along within the mind of a slightly broken young woman as she lives her life in the underthing.

Auri wonderfly defined & World expanded

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - IF they have read the first two books only.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Auri - This character was a small part of the main chronicle line and seemed out of place, this book fills in the many blanks the character had. This is also a bigger & detailed brush of the world for the Kingkiller Chronicles.

What does Patrick Rothfuss bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Everything! - You can hear the passion in his reading.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No - This was a full flesh out of of the character - you are put into the mind of a mentally disabled person and how someone would need to deal with OCD and living in a fantasy world (in a fantasy book!)

Any additional comments?

This novelett helps to show how someone manages well in self made fantasy world of their own making - the back drop is the key, it is placed in a section of abandoned homes and buildings that makes up Auri's world. The unseen thing is that she is ALONE as she manages and she doesn't need someone to HELP her.

About a curios little person who is amazingly fascinating. She takes you on an amazing adventure in her own little world down under.

It's not for everyone but I loved it

There are several "Reader bewares" stated by the author about this book. He is not wrong, this story is not for everyone. I had a tough time getting through it if there were distractions but I love the character Ari and I was always curious about her from the previous books, this story gives you a glance into what her life is like. It gives her character so much depth that The Name of the Wind and KingKiller don't have the ability to give. I recommend this book as a read for anyone who has already read the two previous and who can open their mind to 'different'.
