Publisher's summary

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg returns to the enchanting world of The Paper Magician.

Alvie Brechenmacher has arrived in London to begin her training in Polymaking - the magical discipline of bespelling plastic. Polymaking is the newest form of magic, and in a field where there is so much left to learn, every Polymaker dreams of making the next big discovery.

Even though she is only an apprentice, Alvie is an inventor at heart, and she is determined to make as many discoveries - in as short a time frame - as she can. Luckily for her, she’s studying under the world-renowned magician Marion Praff, who is just as dedicated as Alvie is.

Alvie’s enthusiasm reinvigorates her mentor’s work, and together they create a device that could forever change Polymaking - and the world. But when a rival learns of their plans, he conspires to steal their invention and take the credit for it himself.

To thwart him, Alvie will need to think one step ahead. For in the high-stakes world of magical discovery, not everyone plays fair…

Another great Holmberg Book

I very much enjoyed the 3 books in Holmberg's Paper Magician series and The Plastic Magician was just as good. I really like following these characters and their magical lives. I love how the author gives such strength and intelligence to these women during a time when women were so extremely underestimated and under appreciated. I hope this series will continue! I'm ready for the next story.

So good best of the series so far

Great young adult book. I was confused at first where the characters where from the first two books but then it became clear this was years later about another apprentice. I very much enjoyed her story and flew through this read.

Not quite as good as the original series

I was extremely excited to see a new "Magician" book be released. I fell in love with the first 3 books and was eager to jump back into the world of magic. Although the author has created a new set of complex and compelling characters, the story just wasn't as exciting or engaging. Though the culprit is not much of a mystery and there were several loose strings in the story (ex. why was the butler so disapproving?) I still enjoyed it greatly and can only hope for another book soon... hopefully containing more than just a couple pages of cameo from my favorite Paper Magicians.

Nice mix of science, magic, action and romance

Fun and interesting even if somewhat predictable. I enjoyed the protagonist's love for cars and mechanics. Narrator started off with great voices and timing but in the late middle started ending all the protagonists sentences in a higher pitch like a quedtion, which was sort of annoying.

Very enjoyable!

I skipped the first three in this series, and though I tried the samples multiple times - I just couldn’t tolerate McFadden’s voice. Sarah Zimmerman did a terrific job and felt right for the voice of a character who was finding her way. The story was enjoyable and Zimmerman was easy to listen to. I wish she’d read the previous three books. Looking forward to more Holmberg books in the future!

Kindred Spirit

So much of Alvie reminded me of myself, I loved her! She was very relatable with her quirkiness and awkward charm.

I am a huge fan of the Paper Magician series, and was excited when I saw this book was coming out! It can be read as a stand alone; however, I found it weirdly entertaining, as if I were in on a secret, when characters from the trilogy would surface in Alvie's story. Charlie has created a charming universe, and I hope she continues to explore it.

The performance was also really great! I listened at 1.5x speed, so it wasn't completely as it was designed, but I felt like the voice actor did a great job bringing it all to life.
