Publisher's summary

Dr. Randall Forth is so desperate to discover a cure for the 48-year-fever, known as Trailmen's fever, he persuades Dr. Jay Allison to undergo hypnosis. Once hypnotized, Jay Allison becomes Jason Allison, his hidden and polar opposite secondary personality.

Join Jason Allison as he leads an expedition into the Hellers to collect medical volunteers from among the Trailmen in an effort to develop the serum necessary for treatment and save the planet. Can Jay/Jason maintain his secondary personality long enough to save his people from the 48-year-fever? To complicate things even further, Jason falls in love with Kyla, the trail guide, knowing that once the expedition is over, he will be replaced by Jay, his cold primary personality - and life as he knows it will no longer exist.

1947 Sci Fi Classic

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. I had read this in paperback form many years ago. Marion Zimmer Bradley was a well received author. Above and beyond these laurels, the narrator, Daniella Acitelli lends an excellent voice to the audio version. It's a short book and audiobook. But it kept my interest.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jay / Jason the protagonist and the team of Trailmen he gathers.

Which scene was your favorite?

The confrontation between the group and a hostile party and the consequences.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. It's about three and a half hour pong. But packs an interesting story and action.

Any additional comments?

A solid audiobook of a Darkover classic

It's been a while since I've read a Darkover book, but I've read about half of them. I had not read this one before, so it was nice to get a new-to-me Darkover story (even though this was one of the very first Darkover books written).

Although there is a quest element to this story, that part is achieved rather easily. But that's quite okay because that's not the real conflict of the story. The real conflict is an internal struggle in Jay/Jason over which personality is the "real" one and which should be dominant. As a psychological novel, it's still not very developed (even the internal struggle seems to resolve itself a bit too easily). But looking at the Darkover series and knowing that this is a first entry in that series, it serves as a starting point for a brief introduction to Darkover.

I will say that at first I was a bit taken aback by the female voice for a first person male narrator (I usually like to have the gender of the voice and character match, especially when the story is told in first person), but after a while, I just got into the story and didn't notice the voice as much. The only slight annoyance was the tendency to over enunciate some of the words so they seemed a bit grating to the ear, but it didn't happen too frequently to be a big issue.

Full of surprises and Mental twists and turns

This book was very interesting. I really love the way two men saved a planet in one body. As usual Marion Zimmer Bradley has written a sci-fi book that left me wanting more. I did not realize that this is part of the DARKOVER series. I enjoyed this short story so much that I am going to start reading the DARKOVER series. My favorite characters are the Trailmen.

The narrator Daniela Acitelli did a great job with character voices. I like the way the 2 personalities in the one body (MPD) have distinct voices. She was able to slip into male and female voices easily. It was a pleasure listening to this audiobook.I will be looking for more of her narrations in the future.

A Very Good 1st Entry In The Darkover Series

The Planet Savers is a short work that is part of the “Darkover” series, which, after the ”Mists of Avalon series,” is probably Ms. Bradley’s next best known work. Although the “The Planet Savers” was written decades ago, I think it holds up pretty well. It’s a very good novella and Daniela Acitelli, who narrates it, does a fine job. If you can separate the writing from the person, readers/listeners should definitely enjoy “The Planet Savers” as well as any of the other “Darkover” stories. It’s a shame that someone with so much talent as a writer had to end up with such a tainted legacy. I won’t go into anymore than that since this is a book review. Anyone interested in anything more about Marion Zimmer Bradley can look things up for themselves.

The Jason/Jay multiple personality idea was refreshing and made you wonder when the next switch would occur and what the possible trigger would be.

Which character – as performed by Daniela Acitelli – was your favorite?

Regis Hastur

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reactions though my favorite scene was Jason's audience with the old one.

Good Stand Alone Story

Darkover is an interesting planet, with a lot going on, apparently! Hoping that the series gets recorded from the beginning as I enjoy Marion Zimmer Bradley's style of writing and would like to read more. I just don't like starting a series on book 9 (the most current one available on audio)!

Jay/Jason Allison is a complicated man. Jay completely turned his back on his childhood and its trauma even as he devotes his life to helping the people that, in the end, rejected him. Jason Allison just wants to live. Can the two men reconcile their individual personalities long enough to live as one and save a whole planet?

I enjoyed this story, I was invested in the characters, and wanted more when it was over. I can't ask for anything more from a story! The narration by Daniela Acitelli was enjoyable as well.

I received this audiobook for free through Audiobook Boom! in exchange for an honest review.
