Publisher's summary

Tristan Fairholm has always liked fixing things. It makes up for everything in his life he can't mend - his parents' divorce, his father's alcoholism, and his little brother's weak heart. But when he kills his brother in a car accident, he destroys the only thing he truly cared for.

He has nearly given up when a mysterious woman appears and offers him a place at her school. Along with 15 other juvenile delinquents, Tristan is given a chance to escape penitentiary while he studies magic in the wild mountains of Canada.

As he learns to extract and shape raw magic, Tristan finds unexpected friendship in his fellow students, from lovable Rusty Lennox to mysterious fey Amber Ashton. But when the school is threatened by a vandal who endangers the lives of everyone living there, Tristan learns that the magic they are harvesting is being put to a dark and dangerous use. While he races to uncover the vandal before his friends are harmed, Tristan must decide if his new friends and his freedom are more important than his morals.

If you loved Harry Potter and The Magicians, you won't want to miss this new YA series.

Absorbing Fantasy Thriller

This was my first experience with R.J. Vickers' work, and it was entertaining. Tristan Fairholm killed his brother in a car accident. Reeling under the emotional onslaught, Tristan was given a chance to avoid jail by attending a school in the mountains of Canada. The worldbuilding was typical in that it revolved around a school, but there were some unusual characteristics also. I liked some of the characters. I liked the magical elements. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. TK Kellman's narration was entertaining. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Great Book!!

I really enjoyed this book,

Tristan and a bunch of juvenile misfit get sent to magic school, where nothing is as it seems, and things can and do go very wrong.

I really became attached to some of these characters, and in the end, even some of the "mean" kids, turned out OK,

Can't wait for book 2

Interesting.

I thought the narrator was okay. I would have preferred a you get sounding Tristan but that’s just my preference. The story kept me intrigued and it really had some Harry Potter elements that I liked. The whole story to me was intriguing. I would say if you enjoy YA wizard books similar to Harry Potter but with a twist then give this audiobook a try.

YA magic and intrigue

I enjoyed listening to this book. Tristan is a nice young man. It is hard to understand how he is a juvenile delinquent and the story always just hints at what happened. Perhaps that is intentional or there is a previous book. Even though parts of the story were confusing, overall, it was a good story. The teachers are cramming a lot of knowledge into the students and giving them a lot of punishments. They still seem to have a lot of time to find trouble. There was action and many twists.

The narrator did a great job. He was energetic. I enjoyed his voice. I would definitely listen to another book narrated by him.

Is bad language necessary in children's books?

The storyline was good, but when I think of good books for kids, I was put off by the language. Those kinds of words have no place in children's books. The performance was great. The voice was very easy to listen to. The story made me think of the Harry Potter series before I read other reviews saying the same thing.
