The earthquakes, global floods, and devastating fires arrive first. The human race, displaced and panicked, flees, migrating to any place where there is food and shelter. Then, the worldwide plague arrives and with it, the stench of death. As mankind suffers and dies out, vampires - whose numbers are also dwindling from the same sickness – struggle, fighting fiercely among themselves to survive in a world where there aren't enough humans to feed upon. As the months pass, they become fewer, more desperate and more ruthless.
Emma, watching the world disintegrate around her, finds herself alone, her family dead, and fighting off an unnatural hunger as she becomes one of the undead. Defying her unwanted destiny, she is determined to resist the bloodlust and loss of humanity she feels, and deny the need to kill and feed on human blood, for as long as she can bear it. But she is so hungry and the night calls...

Unusual Vampire Story
In listening to this book I found the narrator Erica Risberg to be extremely distracting. She does not pause between sentences or other book delineations and I found myself focused on trying to figure out what was happening due to this vs enjoyment of the book
I overall enjoyed this book despite the narrator. Towards the end of the book I had either gotten used to her reading or maybe she had improved a little. I found the idea of the end of the world to be very fascinating and I wish the author had focused on that more. The idea of the last vampire was interesting but not overly intriguing and to be honest I wish the end of the world saga had been told without that part, which I realize is the main focus of the book. I still enjoyed it and really do look forward to listening to another book by Kathryn Meyer Griffith
