Publisher's summary

Jack Miller isn't too worried about the apocalypse. He has been prepping for a few years and has a basement stocked with the food and supplies his family needs to ride out a disaster. Today though, he is out of town on a business trip. An EMP strike delivered by a rogue nation leaves him stranded over a thousand miles away from his home. This is the last place he expected to be during a disaster. He sets out on an epic journey home armed only with his know-how and survival skills. What he encounters leaves him questioning how prepared any lone man can be.

Amy Miller is all set to enjoy a well-deserved vacation day. She's a hard-working mother of two with a full-time career and rarely has a quiet moment to herself. The EMP throws a wrench in the works and leaves her unprepared for the chaos to follow. With the city falling down around her ears, she is pushed to the limit. Her suburban home is well-stocked with supplies, but she clings to the hope that order will be restored.

Faced with the darker side of humanity, will she overcome her inhibitions and do whatever it takes to protect her family?

Contains mature themes.

Anxiety Inducing

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I recommend this book because the story line is flawless and you are right there along side of the characters. I must admit that at times I felt my anxiety welling but then there was that little thing that had me laughing out loud that brought me safely back along with the characters situation.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Wyatt is my favorite character because he reminds me of a old uncle with the things he would say and do.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene is when 14yr old Kenny takes his shot at the bad guy and saves his mom.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book will have you stressing and laughing at the same time. I just loved it and I am now going to listen to book 2. I cant wait to see where the families journey takes them now and to see what the kids think of Wyatt.

Don't buy

I've listened to a lot of post apocalyptic stories. This story is weak and the narration is sub par. Do not buy. Waste of time and money

No!

I usually don't write reviews but I felt the need to write this one. I have hundreds of audio books in my library, many of them from the post-apocalyptic genre. So trust me when I say, skip this one! There are plenty of books out there worth listening to but unfortunately this is not one of them. Rarely do I want a book to end but this one could not end soon enough:-(

Worth a 2nd, 3rd and more listen

Good prepper novel. Could also have been headlined DOING IS BETTER THAN READING...John discovered doing not the same as reading, for example he thought he knew how to set a snare because he had read how to do it, but caught nothing until a companion showed him how. John had a college degree and a computer job, but his companion, who appeared lowly, had knowledge and experience crucial to John's survival.

Entertaining while extolling practical skills.

John's wife made enough good decisions to keep her kids safe.

I am going to listen to this again, probably several times.

I recommend this book.

okay story, Narrator needs better range

Would you try another book from John Winchester and/or Travis Baldree?

yes for the John Winchester , no for Travis Baldree

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

generally the same as most in the same family

Would you be willing to try another one of Travis Baldree’s performances?

No, I felt like the narrators voice would be better suited for Horror books. His voice made every charter sound sinister and just not suited for this type of series. also the narrators voice was personalty overall irritating to me no disrespect meant. just not a good match for this kind of series.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

interest

Typical Prep Fiction

It's eye roll cringe from the beginning. It hits all the typical points of prepper fiction.

The wife character is about the stupidest, most frustrating I've come across in my reading
and that is saying something.

They protagonist made it all the way to Baltimore from the mid west and then once he gets to Baltimore
what's his first stop? Scavenging. Not going to his house. Scavenging.

Don't waste your time with this book. I imagine the rest of the series isn't much better.

Great book

I was impressed with the situations that the characters encountered throughout the story. Additionally, there were several survival tips woven into the plot which I always enjoy. I read the SHTF books a lot and recommend trying this book out. It stands out from the others. The sequel is the next book on my list. Enjoy!

An OK first time EMP apocalypse novel

This John Winchester EMP survival book was written well for first time survival genre reader and the narration by Travis Baldree made for a enjoyable listening experience. However, there were several areas that were left wide open, such as, was North Korea the proven enemy? Why our anti-missile defense hadn't stopped it? Vague references to federal agencies like FEMA involvement. Simplification of the EMP effects such as not accounting for pre-computer cars with alternators being disabled. Also, the ending was unsatisfying by stopping abruptly right after the family came together with no sense on how they would get out of the dangerous city and back to a presumed safe place for survival.
