Great production quality. Some claim it starts slow, but in audio form it flies by.
For newcomers to the 40k universe, the Heresy novels are set - much like the Clone Wars - in the build-up to the most pivotal moment of the saga. The known universe is controlled by the Emperor and his sons control legions of super-soldiers that fight for survival against alien races and ultimately, each other. This last is where the Heresy novels focus.
The Flight of the Eisenstein tells of a moment where one of the soldiers is faced with a moment of choice and a matter of conscience. Ordinarily the hero would be a cypher, ultimately doomed to die and serving little purpose except to drive the arc forward. Here instead, we're given a book of fully-fleshed characters with dreams, desires and motivations, set against a backdrop of war, intrigue and a literal fight for one's soul.
The Heresy series is not easy to get into without a little understanding of background of the 40K universe but as with False Gods (Book 2) this is a fine place to start. It works almost as well as a standalone as it does in the series and I would rate it as high as Fulgrim or Legion as the best of the series. Garro is a fascinating character, bound to serve but with his own scale of morality that sets him apart from the dour, unimaginative heroes of most space operas.
As the book goes on, we're treated to glimpses inside a fascinating society, great battles and a tense chase before things really start to get nasty. Flight of the Eisenstein is one I often come back to. Jonathan Keeble does an outstanding job given the sheer number of imposing voices he has to conjure and never lets interest falter for a moment.
