Strong Story of Gothic Horror

While a slow start this story is excellent, closing strongly with a mystery that turns into a phone booth knife fight for survival between man and monster.

Interesting, but ending was lacking

I found the book to be an entertaining murder mystery and I liked the depth of the characters. At the end, I found the open-ended finale a bit underwhelming and I didn't feel there was a good explanation regarding the existence of Malcan. However, perhaps that is what one should expect from a Ravenloft novel.

Classic Ravenloft …gothic D&D at its finest!

As a fan of gothic horror and a D&D enthusiast Ravenloft is awesome and novels like this, published by TSR back in the day are well worth a listen (or read). Beware the mist!

Great performance

I absolutely loved Christy Golden's other book Vampire of The Mists and was super hopeful for this one. the story didn't feel as natural, some of the bits at the end seemed completely unnecessary and like they were forced in as an afterthought to scramble some incidents together to support the authors last minute change in direction. absolutely fantastic performance though.

good story but

good story but do to it not being canon for the ravenloft world it didn't help me with campaign prep and that was the reason I got it.

The mists

I liked The Enemy Within. It's world building characters and atmosphere were some of the best in the ravenloft series. But after I listened to the story, I felt as if there was some important part to the book that I had missed. The ending is true to this as it leaves unresolved problems and many questions unanswered. Maybe that was the intended effect. To subject the listener to the same dark forces that corrupted once good rulers to shadowy lords ruling over realms of dread. In the end leaving them with more questions than answers and with less than what they started with.

Scene splice at end results in failed finish

This is an okay story that is more than a little spoiled by the teasers in the book description. It was written in the style of a mystery, but the book title and the cover blurb basically solve the case before the crime is committed.

Added to that is an ending that features one of the worst cut scenes I’ve ever encountered. It’s not that it ends on a cliffhanger, rather it gives you an outcome without showing you what happens. It’s as if you cut the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy and co are running from the witch in the castle, and then have her tap the ruby slippers
