Publisher's summary

All paths lead to war....

Marcus' hero days are behind him. He knows too well that even the smallest war still means somebody's death. When his men are impressed into a doomed army, staying out of a battle he wants no part of requires some unorthodox steps.

Cithrin is an orphan, ward of a banking house. Her job is to smuggle a nation's wealth across a war zone, hiding the gold from both sides. She knows the secret life of commerce like a second language, but the strategies of trade will not defend her from swords.

Geder, sole scion of a noble house, has more interest in philosophy than in swordplay. A poor excuse for a soldier, he is a pawn in these games. No one can predict what he will become.

Falling pebbles can start a landslide. A spat between the Free Cities and the Severed Throne is spiraling out of control. A new player rises from the depths of history, fanning the flames that will sweep the entire region onto The Dragon's Path - the path to war.

glad I didn't listen to reviews

I almost didn't purchase the audible book. a lot of the reviews on the narrator was so bad. I did anyways. I read first two books a long time ago. forgot the author. and finally found it years later. so gave it a shot. I have listened to a lot of books on here and yes I have come across bad narrators. I'm legit confused why this has such bad ratings. narrator wasn't bad. Makes me wonder if narrator was changed.
My advice is give it a shot. You can always change your mind after a chapter or two. I didn't. now off to book 2❤

Truly Recommend

Political intrigue, great cast of characters, and a fun series of interrelated plots. There is none of the dense exposition that haunts so many books in the genre. The book took some time for me to really get into it, but I'm so glad i gave it a chance. Once the characters pulled me in, the story never let me go and has continued strong into The Kings Blood.

I found the narration to be truly excellent, differentiated voices that I felt fit the characters, and my only quibble was with the quick transitions between chapters that could have used longer pauses and explicit chapter referencing rather than just stating which character it was focused on. Still, this is truly one of the better fantasy books I've read in a long while and I dont hesitate to recommend it.

Really wanted to like it

I really wanted to like this book and I will continue listening to this series. I think there is something here but it was pretty boring. The narration was awesome. My only complaint about it is that some parts are really quiet and others are really loud. Listening to it with headphones hurt my ears.

Phenomenal Audiobook and Excellent Beginning!

I've loved this series in print and am now enjoying it again in audio form. Excellent narrator brings the phenomenal story to exhilarating life. I cannot recommend this enough. A fantasy masterpiece with some of the most delightful characters and most brilliantly crafted world building.

Amazingly compelling story!

There wasn't a dull moment. Even the political intrigue was so intensely and obviously fraught with danger that you couldn't turn away from it for fear of missing the next turn of the story. Absolutely masterful.

Narration is a 15 hour action movie trailer

I was so excited to read an be acclaimed fantasy series by the writer of The Expanse. and the story seems awesome. But 20 minutes in, I can't imagine sitting through 100 hours of this smarmy, broad jawed, gravely Gaston schtick. There's no expression or variety. Everything sentence is treated with the same generic "In a world..." tone and pacing. Give the sample a listen, and if you think you can handle this for 15 hours, you'll probably enjoy the book. Otherwise, it's a damn shame, because this seems like a really good book.

Questionable choice in characters

The majority of characters are just unlikable with no redeemable qualities. One is a fifteen year old girl who thinks she's smarter than adults. She freely gives her body to almost any man who shows interest in her, but it's ok because she doesn't charge. Another is a nobleman who thinks commoners are dogs and less than human, but it's ok because he cares deeply about his wife. Another an overweight nobleman who is put in charge of a city, ruins the city with heavy taxes, then burns down said city with people in it. Book even details how he had his men kill babies, but it's ok because the experience haunts him and he feels slightly bad about it. The girl and the overweight nobleman just baffle me in terms of intelligence, and the choices they make. If these seem like characters you want to read about, by all means. I stopped with three hours left lol. It was the result of one the girl's choices that just sent me over the edge, don't think I'll try to finish or buy the next book.

WHY ARE MORE PEOPLE NOT GETTING THIS SERIES?!?!?!

First off, I have seen a few reviews that mention the Narration... The only way it would be possible for this to be an issue is if there was a different Narrator previously. Pete Bradbury is simply amazing in this series. I haven't heard him do anything that didn't turn out to be wonderful.
Second... The story itself is incredible. The plot is deep and the world is rich with variety. The story arch's through this series are so well planned out and executed that there is little doubt left as to the time and detail that went into planning out each of these books. I love how original and subtle the magic system is as well, you are not overpowered with some type of magic that makes it rule the story, instead this magic is just something that enhances and already great tale.

People should get the word out. There are far too many books of low quality in both prose and production out there that this series should be a must own.

Had potential, but narrative felt detached

This book started off in intriguing ways and has an interesting world...but then not much of consequence happened. Much of the plot felt adjacent to the real action. Even the things that did happen were not written in an engaging way, like the reader is watching the whole world unfold from a bird's eye view with the writer. Case in point: there is a scene where one character sneaks around and betrays another. There is hardly any suspense, no real moment of fear of getting caught, little effort at describing trepidation. I stayed with the book the whole way through hoping something exciting would happen. But it doesn't. It's like the whole book is just set up for the next, but you'll see reviews for the next book in the series that say the same thing...it's almost like the author planned to write a trilogy and was told to stretch the plot out over five books.
