Publisher's summary

In this epic dark fantasy adventure story, Shannon and Dana visit their wise old grandmother in Wales, and finally learn why their lives have been strangely tormented and cursed. There is a family secret, old as time itself, and that secret might kill them if they try to ignore their destiny. They also learn that there is a dangerous way to embrace that secret, because on that day, a harrowing creature of an alien world calls out for the few and the special, talented humans of the tenth world. Our world.

Dana performs an irreversible murderous deed that opens the gate to the Jewel of the Nine, the world of Aldheim, and they meet the strange creature calling for them. In this world they find their true calling, their special talents, the truth of the gods and also a world of mystery, danger, and adversity. Shannon and Dana struggle with their previous relationship as one grows cruel and power-driven, while the other learns to value friendship. Much is demanded of Shannon, who struggles with her loyalties.

Despite the many dangers and their apparently hopeless situation in the brutal, mage-filled world of monsters and dragons, there is hope, for Shannon has special, coveted powers of healing, reserved for the chosen of the gods. If she perseveres, she can change the past and bring back the gods.

But the price will be great.

Looking forward to book 2

The dark levy is a great fantasy with giants, dragons, gods and gorgons but at its base is an age old story line of how the weak become the strong through a gift/ability and those thought to be untouchable are less so.
There are many satisfying twists and turns but I have to admit I hated the ending of this story. It literally feels like the Author just picked a point half heatedly in a large book and said this will be book one and this will be book 2.
Otherwise this was a great book.
Please note I was given this book free in return for an unbiased review and that is what I have given.

Amazing Dark Fantasy

This is a truly original Dark Fantasy, mixing mythologywith an original tale that brings you engaging characters, both good and not so good, great worldbuilding and a fast paced plot that keeps you on your toes. Kristin James, who I had never heard prwviously, does an outstanding job bringing the story to life.

A Very Dark Fantasy

Shannon has special powers that everyone wants to use for their own agenda. She and Dana are very weak to start out but they get stronger through knowledge, fighting and strategy. The book ends abruptly so I guess that means there will be a book 2. it would be nice if it at least ended at a point that seemed to be an ending. But what do I know. I read books, I love fantasy books. Oh well. I was given this book in exchange for an unbiased review via audiobook boom. Book 2 perhaps will be the conclusion. This one was very long to leave me hanging. I don't care for books like that. I like series books but each one should end as a whole book even if it will continue the story in the next book. But as I said I just read books and have been since I was four years old. Several librarians know me personally and I have more than 4500 books on my kindle app and more than 300 in my audible account. This has been my passion since I retired and I don't see it slowing down. A little about the narrator. Keep on doing it. You have the hang of it. Would love to hear you read some other PN and romance books with a woman partner.

Very different! Excellent dark fantasy!

Love the story! Love where this ended up! INSANELY AWESOME ENDING! Gorgeous writing! I love the characters that I love, and I loathe the characters who I hate!

Part #1 was epic! Love the beginning! The story and action flew! It was very exciting!

That all said, it's always easier to rant about the things you don't like than the things you do.

At the opening of Part #2, the story just stops dead due to info dump. Yes, the author is very guilty of the classic Epic Fantasy info dump. All ten major characters are introduced in a single scene accompanied by a full background.

The info dump alone stopped me dead in my reading tracks. But, I prevailed and am so glad I did! The info dump was boring, frustrating, and aggravating, but tolerable. That being said, here's what I hated.

The antagonist's henchmen are all bipolar. They are both evil and threatening while being considerate and accommodating. They exercise an incredible (and hypocritical) amount of patience while being very accommodating throughout the story despite their very real murderous threats, which they do deliver on.

"You are slaves! Ask no questions or we will kill you!"
The children ask their questions and the henchman patiently accommodate the questions encouraging them to ask questions because they are students now.
More questions are asked and suddenly they flip.
"YOU'VE ASKED TOO MANY QUESTIONS! WE WILL KILL YOU!"
More questions are asked and the henchman, again, calmly answer all questions.
After pages of dialogue (here's that info dump I previously mentioned), the characters ask more questions and the henchman snap.
"ASK NO MORE! YOU ARE OUR SLAVES!"

Now, this is really the only problem I had with the story and, as you can see, it's minor. This chapter of sustained belief aside, the story and writing is epic! WELL WORTH THE CREDIT!

Not the right story for me... But the narrator...

She is fantastic. Truly.

I often struggle with female narrators. The men's voices often feel forced and awkward and not nearly deep enough to capture the mood or tone. And often the tonal range is higher in pitch and begins to hurt my brain after 5 or 6 hours straight listening. I have this same issue with male narrators who have higher pitch voices as well.

But Kristin James is wonderful. So now I have two female narrators to follow. Kate Reading, and Kristin James.

Both K names... Hmmmmmm... ;)

A Very Dark Fantasy

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely! This book is unlike anything I've read or listened to before

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character, Shannon, finds a book that she isn't supposed to read

Which character – as performed by Kristin James – was your favorite?

Her performance blew me away. Along with the background narrator voice that carries the main story, each character has such a unique voice and accent that you know who is talking

The Narrator Was Incredible

I had read the story on kindle originally and then got the Audible copy a little while later. The Narrator made this story even better than I had originally hoped. She brought all of the phenomenal characters to life and her interpretation of the Gorgons was AMAZING.

Great Listen and Interesting Story

Would you listen to The Dark Levy again? Why?

Yes, I have listened to the story again after listening to the second book, Eye of Hel. I was interested in finding the subtle hints tying together elements of the overall plot.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dark Levy?

The main character, Shannon, finds a book that she isn't supposed to read which throws the lives and safety of the Ten Tears into complete chaos.

Have you listened to any of Kristin James’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not listened to any of her other performances but I found her presentation to be enjoyable.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I found the main character to be very relatable and feel affected by the various tragedies she endures.

Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, while I feel that it had a bit of a slow start it does a great job on laying the ground work for the following story, The Eye of Hel. The story was magical and dark; incorporating mythology and legend into a distant world full of violence and deception. The characters are relatable, with different flaws and backgrounds that keep you engaged and interested in learning more.
