Uneven

Story quality uneven and most seemed to end just as the rising action was starting (were these opening chapters from unpublished novels?). Disappointing.

Too much gay/lesbian agenda not enough story.

Bordered on Gay Porn
more gay/lesbian fantasy than Sci-fi.
Very very Disapointed. Not worth the credit.

Not interestingly to me

Seems like very poor short stories to me. did not seem like Science Fiction, just a story about nothing to do with any type of science involvement.

mostly fantasy

Is most modern fiction about lbgtq stuff. At least two stories were so bad I skipped them after a few minutes listening. If this is the best of the genre then the state of modern science fiction and fantasy is really in sad shape.

Anthology of recent authors

I enjoy the current anthologies a great deal, but some of the social commentary involved in a few stories is particularly hamfisted. The range of stories here is impressive. The styles and topics range from distressed character studies to fantasy dragon looting. My preference is for large stories in large settings with competent characters. I don't dislike the flawed or neurotic characters of smaller more personal stories I just find them less entertaining. Some of these stories try so very hard to be social criticism or to perceive some of our present social concerns from a novel angle. I found most of those stories to feel a little forced - if well written. I can appreciate a direct approach to a topic, but prefer the story be involved with more than illustrating a social position. And in a few instances these stories are left hanging. There are a plethora of stories here. All different and all entertaining. It is as an anthology should be: diverse, broad, and of excellent quality.
Recommended for those that appreciate the current styles of science fiction and the classic tale.

the best? I don't believe that

I've read many more interesting stories, and If this is the best to offer it was a terrible year. many of the titles were just tedious or annoying. I enjoyed nothing about this collection and feel I wasted a lot of time looking for something that would justify my purchase.

Not sci fi

These are just twisted lesbian stories for the most part. Belong in a different category, not sci-fi.

Best Sci-Fi?

Slow and often drifting in the beginning few stories. The epilogue seemed like a rant rather than a summation of the year in Sci-Fi. I hope the next HOURS of reading is not as painful as the first that I have listened to.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel for this Volume.

Although there are a few gems in this (the 12th “Best Of” ) it’s not nearly worth the time listening. I listened painfully through several muddled, confusing, and in one case - downright awful stories. If you decide to waist your money - please feel free to skip to the next story when finding yourself mired in poorly written prose - and treasure the few Dimond’s found here.
