Alex Verus’s insights into the future used to be the best-kept secret in London. Now, with the aid of his apprentice, Luna, his unique investigative talents are all the rage. He just has to be careful about picking his employers, because everyone - even the beautiful woman who practically begs him to run security for a prestigious tournament - has motives that can be hard to predict. And Alex doesn’t do unpredictable.
But his latest gig just might be impossible. Apprentices have been vanishing without a trace - and someone on the Council could be involved. Alex has no evidence, no witnesses, and no suspects. All he knows is that someone is keeping tabs on him. And after assassins target Luna’s classmate, Alex sees that he doesn’t know the half of it - and that he could be the next to disappear.

Great book. Action packed and fun.
This is the third book in this series. I have to say that the Alex Verus series has quickly become one of my favorites. Taken is another strong entry for Mr. Jacka. This book, like the others, is stand-alone but does slowly build on the history of the main characer.
The world is complex and well-developed. The magic system is well thought out and makes sense without an inordinate amount of suspension of disbelief being required. The good guys are likeable and you want to see them succeed. The bad guys are truly evil and you look forward to see them getting what's coming to them.
I love the Verus character. He is the dark, bad-ass Harry Dresden thinks he is. Verus tries to do right, but will not hesitate a bit to kill someone in cold blood in order to survive. This brings a level of realism, and the more you learn about the protagonist the more sense his outlook makes.
This is a fun, action packed book. It doesn't have all the humor and pop-culture references most urban fantasy novels have. I think that is a good thing as it makes you focus more on the story and what is happening. It was a nice mystery that is definitely worth a credit.

Each Book Makes Me Love This Series More
I wanted to love the first book but I only liked it enough to give the second book a try. By the end of book 2 I was hooked. Taken, the 3rd book of the series, introduces new characters and even more intrigue, action, and suspense. Alex Verus is a complex human being...like the rest of us with an intriguing ability we only wish we had.
