Nineteen-year-old Steve Maxwell just wants to get his feet on the star road to find a better homeworld. By facing down Lotus Tong thugs, he earns an opportunity to become an apprentice on a merchant spaceship, leaving the corruption and crime of Earth behind. Sure, he needs to prove himself to an older, tight-knit crew, but how bad can it be if he keeps his head down and the decks clean?
He never counted on the interstellar trade routes having their own problems, from local wars to plagues of pirates - and the jade in his luggage is hotter than a neutron star. Steve's left a world of troubles behind, only to find a galaxy of them ahead....

Great series of books. Looking forward to it!
The audio version is not as good as the book, but still pretty good. The book was excellent and I still reread it every so often.
My favorite character, although short lived, was Vince. He is the one that set the ethos of the entire book.
Don't believe I have. Unless he does sci-fi I doubt it.
Yes! Even though I know how it finishes, I still want to finish it.
Very much looking forward to the next in the series.
Heading Out Into Space And Freedom
Up there. I thought this was very easy to follow both on the writing and the narration side. Perfect for this format.
Nathan Lowell's Quarter share as it's about someone getting their space legs and becoming a merchant. This has a bit more action, however.
Hard to say. I don't feel like the narrator really does a ton of differentiation with the character voices, but he does give a great feel for the perspective character. So probably the main character, Steve.
