Publisher's summary

Twenty-one years after the Battle of Endor, the New Republic will face an even darker enemy....

More than two decades after the heroes of the Rebel Alliance destroyed the Death Star and broke the power of the Emperor, the New Republic has struggled to maintain peace and prosperity among the peoples of the galaxy. But unrest has begun to spread and threatens to destroy the Republic’s tenuous reign.

Into this volatile atmosphere comes Nom Anor, a charismatic firebrand who heats passions to the boiling point, sowing seeds of dissent for his own dark motives. And as the Jedi and the Republic focus on internal struggles, a new threat surfaces from beyond the farthest reaches of the Outer Rim - an enemy bearing weapons and technology unlike anything New Republic scientists have ever seen.

Suddenly, Luke Skywalker; his wife, Mara; Han Solo; Leia Organa Solo; and Chewbacca - along with the Solo children - are thrust again into battle, to defend the freedom so many have fought and died for. But this time, the power of the Force itself may not be enough....

A good book ruined by bad narration.

What would have made Star Wars better?

I've read this book in paperback before, and rather enjoyed the story. There is certainly nothing wrong with the book itself, as I was excited to listen to it this time to relive the memories. But the narrator, Anthony Heald, has a terrible performance in this book, not putting any effort into the characters' voices and making terrible sounds with his mouth, as well as reading at a very awkward pace. Not having him try and match the characters' voices in the films was okay, but the pace of reading in this book was so clumsy that I couldn't wait to get through it, so I could find a book with a better narrator. The timing in several of the sentences he reads totally changes the mood and feel of the story, and ruins some of the most emotional parts in Star Wars novel history. Save your money or credits, this narrator ruins a great story.

What didn’t you like about Anthony Heald’s performance?

Pace of reading was too fast many times, and too slow in all the wrong parts. Reader didn't bother to even try mimicking character voices. Reader smacks mouth in annoying and awkward clicking sounds.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Star Wars?

I would have cut Anthony Heald and given the part to Marc Thompson.

Any additional comments?

These older books would be nice to have redone with the quality of later books narrated by Marc Thompson. I listened to those in a matter of weeks, and would gladly listen to more if they were as well performed by those later Random House Audio presentations.

Anthony Heald's reading is slow torture.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Anthony Heald?

Marc Thompson is the only one who should be narrating the Star Wars books. His descriptions and the emotion he puts into his reading makes you feel it as if you are there.

Any additional comments?

Listening to Anthony Heald's narration is painful. The combination of his horrible accents, and the disgusting sounds that come from the inside of his mouth (clicking and sloshing saliva), I cringe when I listen to him.

Audible, please look into remaking all of the abridged Star Wars books. They all need to be unabridged with the polish of the Fate of the Jedi series. I listened to that entire 9 book series in three weeks.

To much left out

There is so much detail that was left out. It's really a shame this is such a great book.

No more abridged.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I had read that this book was one of the Star Wars books that had key points in the progression of the series. But in abridged form, it jumped around with obvious gaps. If there was something interesting, I missed it.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Nothing abridged.

What even happened?

I could not follow how everything could escalate so fast. And having a character sacrificed in such an unimportant event? Really? And how could such an advanced society not realize that their moon was going to collide with their planet? It seriously took Han to deduce that outcome to get planetary evacuation started?!

decent narrator, abridged seems to be castrated

the abridged version skims too.many details and leaves you constantly wondering how certain events happen or why more.often than not, I felt almost cheated by the experience.

Terrible abridgment

I made the mistake of buying this book without realizing it was an abridged version. That’s on me.

However, you can abridge a story without tearing it apart completely, and they failed to do that here. Important, plot-altering events are cut from the story, and then referenced later in the story as if they’d still happened! Very confusing.
