Publisher's summary

A doubly disgraced dwarven hero. A band of accident-prone adventurers. Giving redemption a second shot may have been a grave mistake....

Still bruised and heartbroken from their last calamitous quest, Gorm Ingerson and his band of washed-up heroes try to make amends for the orcs they accidentally betrayed. But justice is put on hold when an old foe marches to the city gates. Gorm is horrified to discover a liche pitching the frightened city-dwellers on the merits of the undead lifestyle...at the head of a corpse army.

To save the city from high-pressure sales tactics and an inevitable siege, the dwarf warrior and his misfit band hatch a harebrained scheme that lands them at the top of the king’s kill list. With death and dark magic on his heels, Gorm must craft his own pitch to round up the troops and put the undead snake-oil salesman and his army of pushers permanently out of business.

Son of a Liche is the second book in The Dark Profit Saga, a trilogy of humorous epic fantasy novels. If you like rib-tickling shenanigans, second-rate heroes, and imaginative new takes on tired tropes, then you’ll love J. Zachary Pike’s hilarious blend of finance and high fantasy.

Very entertaining!

The series, through two books, is very entertaining. I enjoy the rag-tag group of “heroes” with the gruff dwarf at the head. Fun writing and creative adaptations of events/companies from our reality intertwined with the storyline makes these books a great listen. Perhaps, most importantly, the performer does a great job with the depth of voices he can utilize to flesh out the characters. How he reads that dwarven accent, I will never know.

Excellent followup. Insightful, crafted, hilarious

Sometimes second books take a while to get back into. This one took about 5 minutes and I was once again glued to the mythos. The characters and performance were excellent (Tilsdale has quite a deck of voices) and the story arc was clever and not necessarily predictable. The running jokes and bits only kept getting funnier (the chapter transitions alone are notable for their hilarity). And to top it off, I actually explained to a meeting of execs recently why something one of them said was likely to invoke Nove's 2nd principal of universal irony. They took it quite well all in all. Worth a credit without question, especially since it's a full sized book. Thanks Mr. Pike for respecting your readers enough not to hack your masterful work into tiny bits. Looks like I'll be pre-ordering the 3rd.

Even better the second time around

Narration and story are both great. A perfect blending of modern economics and fantasy tropes.

Enjoyable read

A fun story read well. The story is both amusing and enthralling. Narration makes it most enjoyable.

Good writing + lots of laughs

You can find a lot of humorous D&D type stories that are filled with chuckles. But the story is relatively thin. This series has both lots of laughs and good writing. I love both the sharp humor and interesting story. I can't wait until the next one!

A new satire fantasy author has entered the world

This is a review of both this book and the first book. There are two kinds of satire fantasy authors. Those who have an interesting idea and do a one of book and those who can go back and expand what they already layed down and grow it with new funny images from the normal world. The first is like John Scalczi with his Red Shirts and the second is like the late Sir Terry Pratchett and his Discworld series. I got J. Zachery Pike's second book early and I have to say it seem like we have a satire author similar to Mr. Pratchett. Mr. Pike takes economic ideas and puts them in a fantasy universe with a satirical twist that shows how oddly and yet logically these things would work in a fantasy world and how people who work in these areas should logically understand the consequences of their business practices and what they should do from running themselves and their economy but don't in our world.
Their is a more serious story element running through the book but I think it would be closely related to a Discworld type story. Well worth the money.

Even better than the first book!

I wasn't sure what to expect from this one going in, but when I saw the 20-hour length, I knew it had a chance. I was not disappointed!

See, there are a lot of audiobooks that are really good, but relatively short. If you spend a credit on one of those, it has to be really good in order to feel worthwhile. If it's as long as this book, it feels more satisfying even if it's just average.

That said, this was not an average book. It was great! I might almost go so far as to say that it's the best piece of financial fantasy humor that I've ever experienced. The characters were good, the plot was good, the narrator was good, the jokes were fantastic... I am very excited about the next one in this series.

If you have any interest at all in fantasy, humor, or economics -- any of them, really -- don't hesitate to grab this one. It's definitely worth the credit!
