Brilliant and heart wrenching sequel

A brilliant, heartbreaking sequel to Defects. There is so much to say about this story I really don't know where to start. This audiobook tore my heart out and left it bleeding on the ground, both the writing and the narration portrayed perfectly the emotions felt by the characters, be it fear, sorrow, regret or acceptance of the inevitable. It not only made me cry once, but twice! The fight to overthrow Vider and stop the Defect conversation program continues to feature prominently in the storyline, it is suspenseful and action packed, but for me it is the relationships of the character that made this book standout. The characterization is excellent and the surprising and devastating twist at the end of the book leaves you breathless. As the story progresses you can not help but become even more invested in these characters lives, empathizing and associating with them. I love Nona's intelligence and humour, Ren's sarcasm, Zack's willingness to sacrifice and put his friends needs first, and of course, Em and Rouge's love. Their relationship is not a flash in the pan romance, as in most YA books, but rather it is one based on long term friendship and respect. You feel for them and want then to beat Vider, have a HEA and live out their lives in that little cottage in the woods. The complicated and often dysfunctional family relationships also adds depth to the book, Em's Farther and her sister, Dee, continue to become darker characters, betraying and manipulating at every turn. Rogues abusive farther, Vider, persists in his quest for power and in his need to destroy those who could challenge him, including Em and Rogue. On the other hand there is Tutu, Nona and, to some degree, Ren who are willing to put themselves at risk in order to support/help Em and Rogue. Rebels is a suspenseful and heart wrenching read with a great plot, surprising twists and a very well chosen narrator that is able to bring the characters to life and give them individual personalities. I can not wait for the next in the series. I received this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Not to be missed!

*****The author gave me a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review****

Wow. Don't start listening to this audio book series if you have anything to do that day. The story just consumed me. While this audio book didn't have as epic of a storyline as the last book in scope, it hit me much more emotionally. I mean, the whole book was more emotional for me not just THAT ENDING.

The last book left off with Em and Rogue fleeing to live in a little house away from Austin valley. They left Zack and Em's sister behind to start the revolution. Em returns determined to find a solution as she sees Rogue's health is getting worse and he refuses to go see doctor Parker. Em is both determined to solve the mystery of Rogue's failing heath and to help Zack and her sister jumpstart the revolution.

There are some really interesting scenes with Zack and Em and I am very excited to see where their relationship goes. The full cast was there and there were some pretty awesome moments with Em's sisters. I like the setup the author is making between the sisters.

In short, if you like YA dystopia you shouldn't miss this series!
