Publisher's Summary

Anthony Tinoco is just an average guy looking forward to his first day at college. Unfortunately, he gets lost on the huge campus, and when he follows a hot girl to what he thinks may be his first class, he's accidentally introduced to a new world full of action and adventure. A world that exists in parallel with our own, the System. Now, Anthony is getting new skills for doing every day tasks, gaining levels from fighting monsters, and experiencing adventures he never thought possible.
Not everyone is happy to see someone like Anthony with these new powers, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to stop him from using them. Including murder.
Will he be able to handle these strange new powers? Or will his enemies win and force him back to his normal boring life?
Project Alpha is a lit-RPG adventure.

Glad I picked it up.

I grinned like a fool through this book. MC felt genuine and the banter throughout the book was well... amazeballs! Only three things spoiled a little fun for me though. The pronunciation of Luffy and Samus made me cringe a little. Dungeon core was changed to dungeon seed after it was introduced. Those small things didn't take away anything though because this book was tons of fun. So so glad I picked up this book.

This is whole big review

( try not to cringe at any errors I make)

Ok so this is the first lit rpg I haven’t fell in love with, and don’t take it too harshly since I’ll be comparing you to Aleron Kong, for example and reference mainly.

I’d like to start with the character Anthony, an all around do right and play by the rules to the T kinda kid,he loves his family and is aspiring to well put food on the table and do best by them. So far nothing wrong. -

Hey there’s some spoilers up ahead don’t read it if you still want to judge this book yourself and experience the story first hand...ears? Whatever just don’t gripe about spoiling if you keep reading ,yeah?

Except you look closer and you notice I used the word kid not young man or something along the line of what would better describe an 18 yr old,Anthony over the course of the story is either getting lectured to be a good boy or getting embarrassed over such things he should be able to shrug off by now.

The first few moments I had thought well ok it’s a little cliche to make him like this at the start but I’ve seen it done before he’ll break his shell and become battle hardened and be able to make tough decisions he’ll become the cool mysterious type to those who only knew how he was before.

But his shell isn’t broken,he doesn’t even touch it,he huddles inside and stays there. While around him he’s facing down his own deaths and gruesome events that while not entirely real with in dungeons still happen and he does have a moment where this effects him but only briefly it wasn’t really worth writing about if he only going to not talk about it or think on it more, again it was just a fake dungeon so it was understandable but if it had been a real dungeon and he had seen a real person die it might have impacted both him and he story.

(I don’t count the beginning even a little.)

Now let’s talk about his immaturity,he can banter with a cute 20 something, and learn how to gain her affection, goes on a date with her and decided nah it’s not right,ok ok hey that’s a pretty good choice but maybe you should have thought about that before you started it now it doesn’t mean anything and who cares about it anymore it was unimportant part of the story and a waste that could have put more time toward lily speaking of I actually did like lily caught a lot but more on her in a bit.

If there’s one thing about every character but more importantly Anthony it’s that throughout his journey if that’s even what you want to call ,honestly because gaining about 13 levels only to go down a couple of levels and time skip going back up to just the right level he needed was as well pointless. Anyways the one thing he lacked was character growth he’s a mommas boy tried a true.

Since I started talking about useless events instead of going into to much detail I’ll just list them

To a point the zombie dungeon was too long and ended up wasting time, Nancy wasn’t utilized and it to took big of what felt like a big chunk of time.

Every time you describe what is being cooked or how or what it is,is a very big waste of time no one cares and if they did they either already know what it is or will look it up,(don’t take this as a racist comment I’m Hispanic myself but the amount of times I heard Spanish or Mexican I just got so bored,

The Irish Scottish what ever project he did was a very big waste of time,at this point you were filling in pages too just fill them in,it was rather sad and I actually had to pause for quite a while before I was willing to keep listening speaking of waste asking lily for money and resources to do a school project was not right in anyway it took away my belief that lily was in a struggle for both of those.

And finally on the list is the PG torture scene I felt no sadness or sympathy for Anthony, how could I there wasn’t any real cries of agony or sobbing wails making the character break which is usually what torture is,not lazily nipping the character for 5 points of damage yeah there was some stabbing but there wasn’t much description of him being too phased, from what I remember at least

Ok so I said I liked lily,it’s true she’s cool and strong and for the most part probably should have been the main character, her parents died and she’s wants to find their killers, she starting a whole new company and everyone’s against her not to mention she’s got a rather nice sense for justice and getting rid of dungeon that harm the world honestly I don’t see how Anthony become the main character when lily had so much more to offer

Next a rather important thing your pop culture reference are way too heavy it’s either Kinda reference things or completely say it with out a second thought or making the character get all giddy needlessly - how a certain magical tent from a movie ok yeah a little HP reference then two seconds later a direct reference saying it’s this ,look everyone it’s from this!

And then there’s the corny jokes ,they were great in the few pages in the convenience store but then become repetitive especially the third date joke I felt it was rather beneath lily to give that joke more then once, honestly it got goes from PG to trying to be PG 17 and ends up being barely PG 13, with all of this I will say that I don’t really regret getting the audiobook, but I regret how this could have been better and hey I’m actually going to look forward to the next one I won’t be picking up your other books and I’ll just stick with project alpha to at least see(hear?) how it ends
Maybe in the future books you could move Anthony in to being much more independent like living on his own or own room in Lily’s base it can’t be the first time someone of that universe was able to meet someone to combine bases with making it more powerful , and because having Anthony live with his maybe gf and having to live with his mom and sister under same roof just don’t seem like it’ll work out for anyone

I felt like I could have typed a lot more but I don’t want to spend to much time on this and again I do NOT hate this book just feel a little bad about it
