Publisher's summary

Brash, cocky, and unbeatable with a sword (well, almost), Sam of Haywood is the most promising Paladin trainee in the kingdom of Thule. The only problem is that Sam is really Lady Samantha, daughter of the 17th duke of Haywood, and if her father has his way, she'll be marrying a Paladin, not becoming one.

But Sam has never held much interest in playing damsel in distress, and so she rescues herself from a lifetime of boredom and matrimonial drudgery. Disguised as a boy, Sam leaves home behind to fight demons - the most dangerous monsters in Thule - alongside the kingdom's elite warriors. Pity that Tristan Lyons, the Paladin assigned to train her, is none other than the hero of her childhood. He hasn't recognized her, but if he does, he'll take away her sword and send her packing. As demons wreak havoc across the land, rebellion stirs in the West, led by a rival faction of warriors. A war between men is coming, and Sam must pick a side. Will saving the kingdom cost her life - or just her heart?

A recommendation more than a review.

If you are looking for a book with detailed swordplay, a woman with the spirit of a warrior fighting against societal norms, knights, and a rich universe that suspends disbelief? This is the wrong choice for you. Try ANY of Tamora Pierce's Tortall books (but not the audiobooks).

Paladin starts off very strong, but as the story goes on the combat just falls apart. The writer falls into the trap of TELLING the reader how awesome the fights are instead of SHOWING us.

On a good note, the morals of the story are very clear and our strong female paladin does not waiver. But she is incredibly insignificant in fight scenes.

This author shows A LOT of promise and I look forward to her writing's maturation. But if you are looking for the above mentioned qualities, PLEASE read Tamora Pierce.

Excellent Epic Fantasy with Strong Female Lead

Would you consider the audio edition of Paladin to be better than the print version?

Yes. The voice actor did a great job with executing.

What did you like best about this story?

The Twist of the Paladins.

Which scene was your favorite?

The hospital scenes with the light humor were my favorite.

Any additional comments?

I first read this novel on Wattpad where I also write epic fantasy. Both of us have popular fantasy novels on there, and hers published first. This story is absolutely amazing, and really brings out a strong female character which I don't believe epic fantasy as a genre has a lot of. The character is strong, as strong or stronger than a female in The Wheel of Time. You feel a connection with the protagonist immediately and when the chapters end they leave you craving for more. I highly recommend it to all fantasy fans, the read is enjoyable, and once you get into it, you won't want to put it down. I will be following Ms. Slater's career as it progresses as I am sure that she has many more great novels to unfold. Pick this book up and read it, I guarantee you won't regret it.

Why the size fixation?

The main character is apparently tiny and sensitive about it, going on and on about it. I don't mind that too much. However she goes on to generalize her own tinyness to apply to all women and see all men as generally huge. The truth is that some are naturally strong, and some are naturally scrawny, but the correlation to men and women is loose at best. When she says that women are SO MUCH weaker than men for the eightieth time, I can't listen anymore. Some people are naturally scrawny, but it is irritating to hear that repeatedly generalized into sexist arguments.

Highly enjoyable!

The narrator was mediocre, with character mix up occasionally and slightly one dimensional emotional portrayals. The story was enjoyable with nice surprises and plot twists. I had a hard time pausing it when I needed to do other things, like work or sleep or talk to people. The characters grew nicely through the story and (spoiler, kind of) I was appreciative that the romance didn't ever turn into a true love triangle. I hate love triangles.

Sam or Samantha?

This is a story about a young woman who comes of age during a turbulent time in her land. She is born into certain responsibilities but her heart is calling her to another path.

This is a good, enjoyable adventure and the narrator is easy to listen to.

OK Story horrible Narration

the narrator grates on you - with weird accents and disingenuous simpering it's nauseating.
The story gets lost in the narration - just skipped to the last chapter.
