Editorial reviews

The attempted rape of a magical ki-rin's human companion prompts Bontia Torres and the rest of PUPI, the Private Unaffiliated Paranormal Investigation team, to launch an investigation into this scandalous crime that jeopardizes the already tenuous relationship between humans and nonhumans in Laura Anne Gilman's imaginative, one-of-a-kind novel.

Romy Nordlinger's ebullient, airy performance makes for a pleasant listen from start to finish, and her artful delivery seamlessly blends the seemingly disparate elements of mystery, romance, and urban fantasy in this startlingly original work.

Publisher's summary

"My name is Bonita Torres, and eight months ago I was an unemployed college graduate without a plan. Now I'm an investigator with the Private Unaffiliated Paranormal Investigations team of New York. Pretty awesome, right?

"The Cosa Nostradamus, the magical community, isn't quick to give up its secrets, though. Not even to fellow members. Not even when it's in their best interests. So we've been busting our tails, perfecting our forensic skills, working to gain acceptance. The team's tight... but we have our quirks, too. And our Big Dog, Benjamin Venec... well, he's a special case, all right.

"But we can't give up. We're needed, especially when a case comes along that threatens to pit human against fatae. But one wrong move could cost us everything we've worked for...."

Great follow-up

Any additional comments?

Excellent follow-up to the first book. Laura Anne Gillman has created another winning series that takes place in the Wren's world. In this installment, PUPI must solve a Cosa case to appease both fatae and humans. With only eight months of creating and implementing methodology for crime scene investigations, this seems like a tall order for the PUPI, but a challenge never stops them. This installment does a fantastic job of keeping the reader/listener interested and hoping for a new book in the series. Right story and right narrator make for a fun listen.

over repeated details

If you've read the first book be ready to hear all the details again, it repeats so many of the basic details of the world over and over again. What is current, how its harvested, natural vs human made. Some of it is word for word repeats and it gets a bit tedious.

Interesting story

This book was stronger and better than the first one. The only reason I completed the first one was because the story idea and background intrigued me. I’m happy to say that I’m going to be on the lookout for her next title.
