Publisher's summary

They have always been among us.

An ancient, nature-loving race, the Nahan have protected their secret world by cultivating the myths of fanged, bloodsucking monsters that haunt legends. Yet they walk through our world as our coworkers and our neighbors, hiding in plain sight and coexisting in peace. They survive... and they prosper.

A shy young dreamer, Tomas wanders through his life with help from his good friends and influential family on the ruling Council. Now, he's decided his future lies with the Nahan's most elite class: the mysterious Storytellers. But his family is troubled by his new choice - and by his new girlfriend, Stell, a wild, beautiful, and deadly outcast from a fanatical Nahan sect.

As Tomas descends into the dark wonders of the Nahan's most powerful culture, Stell answers her own calling as an exceptional assassin. But when a lethal conspiracy threatens their destinies, Tomas and Stell must unite their remarkable talents against the strongest - and most sinister - of their kind.

LET'S NOT GET ALL MILITARY ABOUT THIS
This is my 873rd review and until now, I have never encouraged anyone to buy a book. Not since Necroscope have I enjoyed a book so much. This is a different twist on the vampire story. This is character driven and just plain different. It sat in my library for almost a year and I see very few people have tried it, probably cause the author is not that well known. Those who did, may not have known what they were getting into and may have had a problem with the sex and violence, of which there is plenty of both. (still character driven) This claims to be the first book in a series and I have checked on line and can not find a sequel. I assume more people need to find it and read it.

EVEN WHEN SHE WAS MOVING, SHE LOOKED LIKE SHE WAS STANDING STILL
This is intelligently written and will make you think. There is sex and violence, but it is not a steady stream of useless fight scenes or chase scenes. The author is female and there is a small love story, but not like any you have read before. It starts as a coming of age vampire story, but is so much more. It is gritty enough to appeal to the man in you and sensitive enough to appeal to the female in you and imaginative enough to keep you guessing.

Narrator is excellent

Surprisingly good

Could not put it down. I'm not a big "vampire" fan, but this was surprisingly good. I have to admit, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
