Publisher's summary

In a thrilling fantasy series from the author of the Nightblade novels, revenge becomes a quest for a young female warrior.

In a feudal land, a Kingdom is at risk. With no heir to the fragile throne, its future rests with the powerful members of the dying king's Council, including Minori, a nightblade warrior, and Kiyoshi, a dayblade healer. The two men are bound by the sword but divided by two opposing principles: rule the land, or serve it. In their challenge for supremacy, a spark has been lit.

Her name is Asa. Her creed is revenge.

A fierce nightblade warrior, she's spent a decade in pursuit of the enigmatic general who killed her father in a violent revolt - then mysteriously vanished from all records. Now, her desire for reckoning has led her to the village of Two Falls - and straight into the heart of an impending civil war. Minori and Kiyoshi are vying for her loyalty. And Asa must choose sides.

As fresh betrayals unfold and a new uprising looms, Asa knows that chasing a ghost is no longer just a personal quest for retribution. It's going to alter the fate of the entire Kingdom.

Meh. Not similar to others in the series.

Less depth and more politics. Felt disconnected from others in the series. Never connected with the characters or peoples. Didn’t care which group won or which individuals died. Just never developed more than a flat story and flat characters. Nearly returned based on the narration, but I adjusted to it well enough after the first hour. Would not have finished if I hadn’t liked the others books in this world.

enjoyable through and through

great storyline here. unique to where it's not super predictable but when it is predictable it has enough elements within to not make it boring in any way. read the other book as well, definitely one of my favorites!

Okay but was annoyed by the main character

The story was good, but the main character was annoying. It was disappointing that she chose the way she did, how weak she was. I guess I would get the next one to see if I dislike her less or to see if she redeems herself for the harm her and her family caused for the kingdom. Not that the place seemed very nice to begin with.

almost a flawless performance. almost.

Emily was entertaining and skillful in her voice acting, except when it came to the pronunciations of 2 common names. the most irritating of the two was Daisuke. Emily kept saying (Dye-Sue-Kay) which seems like it's correct but it's not. the proper pronunciation is (Dice-Kay). And it all comes to a head in chapter 19 when she mispronounces Daisuke what seems like a billion times. it was a glaring mistake that ruined the emersive quality of this excellent audiobook.

Sloooooooooow

I could hear grass growing as I waited for the plot to, well, appear. It never really got to the "evolve" part.

Predictable and difficult to get through

The biggest problem for me was the narrator. Her performance keeps ending after every second sentence followed by n couple of seconds of silence. It was really jarring.

My second issue is events in the story itself. Some characters act out of character or logical reasoning near the end and it seems like the writer hurried to end the book off just to get it done.. The story was really poor.

I'll pass on the rest of the series.

Basically, this is a story of Japan in the 1800's with the Samurai's being who they are because of the "sense." Enter the Meiji period... Not at all what I expected. The story lacks depth and is very predictable.
