Publisher's Summary

Sunny Los Angeles can be a dark place indeed in Cassandra Clare's Lord of Shadows, the sequel to the number-one New York Times and USA Today best-selling Lady Midnight. Lord of Shadows is a Shadowhunters novel.
Emma Carstairs has finally avenged her parents. She thought she'd be at peace. But she is anything but calm. Torn between her desire for her parabatai Julian and her desire to protect him from the brutal consequences of parabatai relationships, she has begun dating his brother, Mark. But Mark has spent the past five years trapped in Faerie; can he ever truly be a Shadowhunter again?
And the faerie courts are not silent. The Unseelie King is tired of the Cold Peace and will no longer concede to the Shadowhunters' demands. Caught between the demands of faerie and the laws of the Clave, Emma, Julian, and Mark must find a way to come together to defend everything they hold dear - before it's too late.

Fantastic book, if only one thing could change

Fantastic story, the only thing that would have made it better & flow from book one to book two, is if the narrator had stayed the same.

Great next instalment

Would you consider the audio edition of Lord of Shadows to be better than the print version?

Yes - I have both editions and enjoyed the audio far more because of the amazing narration by James Marsters

What did you like best about this story?

That it continued the mortal instruments world with another shadow hunter family

What about James Marsters’s performance did you like?

His ability to give a voice to each character and take on many accents was utterly engaging. He is a fantastic actor and I truly hope that he gets to narrate the next instalments and many more.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, a character discovering the the part desperation played in his relationship - it was such an enlightening part showcasing the complexities of some relationships

Any additional comments?

This is a good addition and expansion for the shadow hunter world progressing on from the Mortal Instruments which I loved, but not as much as The Infernal Devices which is my favourite Cassandra Clare series. If you are new to the shadow hunter world start at the Infernal Devices, if you have read them and the Mortal Instruments, read on and enjoy.

awful performance, great book

loved the book but I did struggle to listen to it as James Masters did not do the book justice. Awful performance compared to Lady Midnight.

That aside, how long do we need to wait until book 3 is released??!

Good book but a little over-progressive.

Have you listened to any of James Marsters’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I like James Masters and really enjoyed his narration of the Dresden books although there were a few slight mispronunciations. The other slight problem I have is that,, considering he played an English Vampire for years on Buffy, he had a terrible English accent for the parts of the book set in the UK.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Better than the Mortal Instruments.

Any additional comments?

What a great story. A riveting listen from start to finish and every second enjoyable. Each character has something to offer and is progressed well. The story is intriguing and full of twists, and the narration is highly engaging. <br/><br/> If I were to make a little complaint it would be that the writing seems to be too progressive in the sense that it seems to make a big deal about not making a big deal about homosexuality. There seem to be more homosexual characters than I would consider realistic in a general cross section of society. So many in fact that it surprises me that Shadow Hunters haven't died out through lack of procreation. Don't get me wrong I am all for inclusion but I just think that the author is trying a little too hard.<br/><br/>Aside from this, this is another great book and I can't wait for more.

Heart racing with every chapter

an unexpected ending but was easy to get lost in the story.
I’ve loved the shadow hunter world since I picked up the first book and i was afraid this series would be too similar to mortal instruments. I was wrong.
James was amazing to listen to and really helped bring the characters to life.

Just everything I never thought it could be

I have been making my way through the shadow hunter books on audible for a while now so I am very invested in the world. But this book surpassed my expectations. I don't want to give spoilers but wow. Where do we go from here?

And James as a narrator is brilliant. He gave so much to this reading I am going to go rewatch Buffy episodes.
