Story is great, but the author has issues...

...embarrassing, juvenile, sexual wish-fulfillment, inferiority/superiority, PG rated issues. You know how sometimes you can just feel the writer sitting in their room working out their personal shortcomings and inadequacies, and you just know that they're desperately trying to will into being a perfect fantasy world for themselves? Especially if they're physically unattractive and totally baffled by the opposite sex? And have the sexual maturity of a 13-year-old?

Well this is that.

The sad thing is that the story itself is really good LitRPG, but it's interspersed with ridiculousness whenever a female character appears.

First, every woman who is even mentioned in the book is sooooooo haaawwwt. This world apparently doesn't have any kinda good looking women in it. And every time a woman appears, regardless of how many times it has already been mentioned, the author has to make sure you know that this woman is INSANELY Hot! But the author doesn't seem to be able to come up with more than 5 adjectives to describe the six body parts that he make all these women so irresistible.

To make matters worse, every one of said women is instantly so totally in luuuuve with the MC that they can't help but let him know how badly they want his sexy body, for realz! This is not surprising because the MC is so good looking and famous and has soooo many big muscles (seriously, it may seem like I'm exaggerating but I'm actually toning it down considerably).

And then there's the flirting... Snooki and The Situation would listen to this audiobook and criticize the incessant, flirtatious dialogue as droll, immature, and wholly unbelievable. In these unnecessarily frequent sections I got really embarrassed for the author (like 13-year-old getting caught masturbating to the JC Penny newspaper ads embarrassed). No adult who has had a single successful intimate relationship could hear this stuff without face-palming over and over.

So why am I bothering to write this long review if it was so bad?... Well this is another one of those not all that rare fantasy/LitRPG books where I struggle to decide whether it's worth sitting through the idiocy in order to enjoy a good story. Because in the end I really did love the story, and I think some people will be able to laugh through the "romance" and enjoy the good parts, while some people will want their credit back with prejudice.

Also, though the narrator does a professional job he's not a great fit for this book. He has one of those extremely emphatic delivery styles that can be ok when reading children's books or in more subdued prose but has a tendency to force cheesy dialogs to rub Velveeta all over their chests and dive down a Slip'n'Slide made of Kraft Singles.

In the end I am ambivalent, but will probably buy the next book. I will spend the credit expecting to have my finger hovering over the fast forward button anytime a paragraph starts out with a description of a woman crossing her legs.
