Publisher's summary

An original novel set in the Halo universe and based on the New York Times best-selling video game series!

It is 2553, and the three-decade long Covenant War that defined a generation has suddenly drawn to a close. Yet in the remotest parts of human space, tensions remain that threaten to overflow into another full-scale conflict. Beneath the surface of the planet Gao lies a vast cavern system renowned for its therapeutic effects and rumored miraculous cures. But now Gao natives are turning up brutally murdered down there - violent acts that happen to coincide with the recent arrival of a UNSC research battalion protected by Spartan Blue Team, led by the renowned Spartan-II Fred-104.

Maverick detective Veta Lopis of the Gao Ministry of Protection is only trying to do her job as the Special Inspector assigned to catch a serial killer - one who is possibly hiding within the Spartan ranks - but she never anticipates the situation spiraling out of control into an all-out crisis. When Gao is revealed to harbor ancient Forerunner technology that could solidify the UNSC's military supremacy for centuries to come, Insurrection loyalists within the planetary government will do anything - even align with a vicious faction of what remains of the Covenant - to ensure that never happens.

Disappointing Outer-Colony Tale

Struggled to finish. The story couldn't keep my attention. It was less "engaging mystery" and more "set up for Halo 5 characters." Scott Brick's voice would be better - suited for stories meant to put children to sleep.

Spartans don't bow to "strong female characters."

One of the better Halo novels over all, very well narrated, and a refreshing take on the universe. Also, seeing the gammas, the betas, and blue team from Ghosts of Onyx was endearing. With that said, the investigator was grating after a while, and while that's my subjective opinion, what isn't up for debate is that Spartan IIs don't submit to civilians. The only time any Spartan put her in her place, it was a female. The feminism is dripping off the pages and a female written like a pissed off male character is pretty tiring considering how well femininity and lethality were balanced in the Kilo 5 trilogy, the Cole Protocol, Ghosts of Onyx, and anything else with Linda & Kelly. It really breaks my suspension of disbelief when a Spartan isn't a Spartan bc muh strong female character and I had to put the book down twice in laughter, so two stars docked from the story.

Halo is becoming refined...

Finally we get to hear more about the Spartan III's, but I want more Spartan II stories, we need to hear more about John, Fred, Kelly, Linda, Naomi etc...

I want to also read about Halsey, I want to see her regain her status and find John.

Regardless the universe is getting good and the stories are becoming more and more mature. Hopefully they won't do to this what they did to the Star Wars EU.

Not the best of Halo...

Would you try another book from Troy Denning and/or Scott Brick?

I'm getting pumped for Halo 5, but this book left me a bit empty. The characters are extremely one-dimensional, and boring in many regards. You're better off listening to Hunt the Truth than getting this book.

Has Last Light turned you off from other books in this genre?

no, but maybe the author

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

It was an ok performance

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

boredom

Any additional comments?

nope!

Awesome

I haven't heard of this author before and I don't think he's written other halo stories but it was very well done. Very interesting detective story that begins as a slick, noir-ish narrative about murders and mystery, then it unfolds into that classic halo story about Spartans doing cool shit. I have a feeling that this story takes place shortly before halo 5 as it seems to set the stage for the original blue team (Spartan II's) to reunite with John and it most likely ties in with the forerunner part of the series

Excellent story

Very well written story and rivals the early genius of nylunds fall of reach, the investigation and murder mystery side of the story was sadly not really explored and a bit of a missed opportunity. The audiobook was well read though I have to admit to wanting multiple voice actors but that is probably because I have been spoilt by the superb hunt the truth series.

Spoiler:
Hope to hear more from Vader Mom) and her new team of gamma Spartan 3's officially listed deceased.

Good Story

Just really enjoyed the story and characters. Hopefully it leads to another story with the Gammas.
