Publisher's summary

Immerse Yourself in a New World

Khe loves her simple life on a farming commune - until she discovers that her gift for pushing the crops is a death sentence. Fleeing across the treacherous wilderness, she makes her way to the city of Chimbalay, searching for the orindles who might save her. But Chimbalay has its own dangers. The powers are there - the secret rulers who have chosen Khe to be the mother of a monstrous new race.

Neither "man in space" sci-fi nor classical fantasy, Khe deftly blends elements of both while satisfying those searching for something different. Listeners looking for solid world-building and fresh and fully realized characters will especially enjoy this book.

A trust betrayed. A transformation that changes everything.

Amazing vision of an alien world

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I found this novel to be an amazing creation. By setting the entire story on another world inhabited by an alien race, Razevich makes big demands on the reader's imagination, but for those willing to take the journey it offers substantial rewards. The story is fascinating, and the writing is full of brilliant inventions.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Khe?

I loved the prologue, with the threatening beasts, and the finale, where we meet the dominating Lumani race. Apparently made of pure energy, they are a convincing evocation of truly alien beings.

Which character – as performed by Angel Clark – was your favorite?

Khe, with the Babbler a close second.

Any additional comments?

A fine audio performance of an extraordinary book.

Unexpectedly Pleasant

If you could sum up Khe in three words, what would they be?

Surprising, mysterious and Absorbing.

What other book might you compare Khe to and why?

Interestingly enough, I am not sure. The story is so unique . . ! It is scify-ish and mysterious and bit of a thriller . . but i fi had to compare them to anything, A princess of mars comes to mind a bit in style and genre.

What does Angel Clark bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The thrill of the story was well communicated through the narration. I felt like, she put herself in the place of the main character so that it conveyed all of the emotions the protagonist felt . . and the effect the events had on her.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was a book I wanted to listen to on a sitting and in fact I did just that.

Any additional comments?

Mrs. Clark brings so much to the table, I love all of her narrations!

Outside of my normal comfort zone.

Although I can say this book was well written and the narrator was excellent, it wasn't my cup of tea. I love Fantasy and SyFi but I guess I expect a good romance story woven into also. I just couldn't relate to this story and from all the wonderful reviews, I believe the lack is mine. I did give it a good try, several times, but just couldn't finish the book.

Alien Sci-Fi/Fantasy - Great Creativity!

This was definitely something different... It was a cross between sci-fi and fantasy.
The entire book takes place on an alien world, but humanity plays no role in the story.
I've only listened to one other book with a similar setting. It takes great creativity to build an entire alien race, their society, biology, planet, etc. This author did a really great job.

The story begins with Khe, an alien in a small farming village who discovers that she is the only one that does not experience the unstoppable pull that all females feel during mating season every two years. For this, she is made somewhat of an outcast.
This all changes when the scientists and doctors in a nearby city claim to have discovered a way to correct Khe's problem. When she returns home, not only is her malady cured, but she seems to have the ability to help the crops grow after she tends them. Khe is able to bring great recognition and benefit to her village by making their crops grow faster and larger, but this comes at a steep price... Khe is aging far faster than should be possible. When her villages leaders refuse to acknowledge this, and want to force her to keep making crops grow regardless of the consequences to her life, she flees her village and attempts to reach the doctors that did this to her, and reverse it if they can.
What Khe discovers in her journey is far more sinister than a simple medical procedure gone bad. There is, in fact, a long history of brutal medical and scientific experimentation going back hundreds of years. Experiments that are being directed by a mysterious, unseen influence that has been controlling her people for hundreds of years...

Narration was very good as well. The narrator did a very good job with the different characters, and the narration never interfered with the story.

I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for something different. The fact that the author emerged the reader into an entire new world without humans was very intriguing and made for a great listen.

An Interesting Allegorical SciFi Fantasy Story

Any additional comments?

In addition to the title of the novel, Khe is the name of the simple, (not stupid), strong, kind, protagonist of an all, female farming commune on a completely alien world. There are no human beings in this book and you really won’t miss them. Somewhat ostracized because of being born sterile, Khe eventually is ordered to go to a group of scientist who have supposedly developed a medical technique to fix her sterility. The surgery does indeed do that, but it also does much more to her. Khe soon develops what I call a mother nature type of power. Among her abilities, she can make everything from trees and crops to bacteria grow and thrive seemingly by her will alone. Unfortunately, this wonderful ability comes with a high price. When her commune leaders discover her ability, she is immediately coerced and exploited for greed with no care or concern for that price.

Author Alexes Razevich had enough material at that point to have an allegorical novel about morality. But she doesn’t stop there. She adds more layers to the novel with a second alien race with ancient secrets and a very specific agenda that involves Khe.

In addition to the plot of “Khe,” author Alexes Razevich also does a masterful job of describing the alien culture and lifestyle of male and females in society. She also does a wonderful job of describing the alien physicality of Khe’s race. The way they show emotion with color. The way they sing songs as an integral part of their communication and culture. It’s all very interesting and serves to pull the reader into the story in such a cool way. After just one or two chapters, I think you will be hooked into taking the journey with Khe all the way through to the end and still want more after you’ve finished the book.

Angel Clark also does a wonderful job narrating/performing this story, including the singing. Also, as a side note, the mic is red hot on this book. The dynamic range and audio volume is easily the highest of any audio book I’ve ever listened to in years. I had to turn down my normal setting or suffer ear damage because of how loud this book came booming through my ear buds.

My New Favorite Author Alexes Razevich

I love the way the author describes people - places and attitudes of the aliens. This is an alien world not a human world. The concepts show the conflicts and solutions from a non-human moral or in some cases immoral, unprincipled and unscrupulous points of view.

When I finished listening to this audiobook, I wanted more. This is filled with drama, deception, action and emotions. I love the world that Alexes has created. This is a way of living that I actually believe exists somewhere out there ^ up there ^.

The only book that this VERY faintly reminds me of is Brian Herbert's The Winds of Dune or his dad Frank's Dune Series. Alexes did not write another version of Dune. This stands alone. I think it might be the sects and politics that makes me feel this way.

This new world with well written characters and details were easily invisioned in my mind's eye. I could easily feel the heat of the sand and smells.

I am not going to give details, because I hate SPOILERS. Just know that my favorite genre is Science Fiction. This fit my requirements for a great story.

Khe begins her journey as simple - moves on to be strong - then becomes a little cynical. The emotional evolution of KHE is a great story. I will be listening to this again.

I am getting ready to start listening to another one her books called SHADOWLINE DRIFT. I expect it will be another great story.
