Excellent!

You picked a great narrator. She did wonderful job with all the different characters. Even though I have read this book multiple times her narrative was very engaging. The only thing that I would've liked even more is if Val and Sandra had stronger French accent.
The story of course is a great start to an excellent spin-off series in TKGU. Looking forward to reading and hearing more about the business of Reclaiming Honor.

Kate Rudd's performance does not disappoint!

Any additional comments?

Speaking to the series in general, I have been truly caught up in the Kurtherian Gambit (TKG) world since "Death Becomes Her" first came out that I get antsy waiting for new works to appear! Not once in the past 10 to 15 years I have I re-read a book (several times even). I am impressed with the world and character development, style of writing and lack of "fluff 'n stuff, page fillers"!

Being moderately vision impaired I am, and have always been, most comfortable with books narrated by a skilled human. The advent of the text-to-speech (TtS) function with Kindles, in conjunction with Kindle Unlimited, made audio books considerably less expensive, yet I love a well narrated book.

As usual, Kate Rudd does not disappoint in her reading of Justice is Calling, the beginning of the Reclaiming Honor series, by Justin Sloan and Michael Anderle. Her skill in narration brought this book to life! There was never a question who was speaking, their emotions or emotional responses – the book flows so well I got caught up listening until late (early?).

One other commentator thought he/she believed Ms. Rudd ought to have given Valerie and Sandra a bit more of a French accent. I went back and listened to areas where they were speaking – it sounded to me as though Ms. Rudd gave them each very faint and distinctly different accents. On the other hand, Europe is already very homogenous and I can only assume 150 years into the future (or 150 after the WWDE) it would be even more so and many of the spoken languages may have merged. Here again, in my mind Ms. Rudd did an outstanding job.

I am basing my assessment of Ms. Rudd’s work with Justice is Calling on previous experience having listened to her performance of:
The Boundary Magic Series
Fangborn (book 1 of the Fangborn series)
The Wretched of Muirwood (vol. 1 in the Legends of Muirwood)
The Kricket series
The Queen’s Poisoner

As with several other reviewers, I was offered a free copy of the Audible version of this novel in exchange for an unbiased review.

post-apocalyptic world with vampires & werewolves

Valerie and her brother are both part of the ruling family of vampires.  When her brother attacks her and leaves her for dead, she has no choice but to leave her home and take the long trip to New York.  The world is slowly rebuilding after a world-wide apocalypse 150 years ago.  Europe is run by vampires, but the New World, though it has its share of vampires, is far further along in rebuilding.  Valerie has to get there before her brother and his soldiers, who want to conquer it for their clan.

Valerie is rare in that she has an innate sense of justice, something unknown in the vampire world, and vows to protect the people of New York.  If she doesn’t succeed, the New World will be plunged into the chaotic Hell that is Europe, which will turn the humans into nothing more than walking food.

This is an interesting story in that it mixes a post-apocalyptic world with vampires and werewolves.  It is both sci-fi and horror in equal measures.  There is plenty of action, including a swashbuckling battle aboard warring dirigibles, hordes of mindless vampires called Nosferatu and hostile werewolves.  The characters are likable and well developed.  We listen as Valerie, already extremely capable, learns about her growing powers.  It is ultimately a battle of good versus evil.

The story is performed by Kate Rudd who does an excellent job.  She is easy to listen to and her character voices match what the listener expects them to sound like.  She holds the mood well and the characters are easily discerned.  An excellent performance.

This unusual story should appeal to vampire enthusiasts, action junkies and fantasy/sci-fi fans alike.  It is a fun twist on the traditional vampire stories.  The book wraps up nicely but will have you excited to listen to the next books in the series.  Recommended.

REALLY REALLY GOOD!

Wow I really liked this book. Valerie is badazz! Love a smart, beautiful heroine that can kick some butt!

This book was full of action, bad guys, vamps, weres, a little romance and a lot of fantastic dialogue! Especially, some of Valerie's sarcasm, loved it! Cracked me up!

She wanted to get away and then get revenge on her brother. She did that for sure and along the way a fantastic story happened. I have already started the second book in the series.

I also see that there was a series before this I am totally going to check out.If you like action and strong female lead characters you will enjoy this book for sure.

As for the narration, it was fantastic! I loved Kate Rudd narrating this book. She did a superb job on Valerie's voice as well as the men's voices. She reads with emotion and made this great book even better! Thank you Kate Rudd.

Awesome read and Awesome narration..

What can I say about this book? I can’t ever remember ever reading a book like this, so that was different. But what surprised me was that I loved this story! And the characters were just phenomenal. Valerie, our heroine, was so kick-ass and loyal and honorable and soooo funny. Oh, she killed, a lot, but she never killed an innocent, like her brother Donovan. OMG, the battles were simply awesome. Especially the one between Valerie’s army, the Enforcers and the police… Or maybe it was the one between Valerie and Donovan… Or maybe it was the brutal, blood thirsty sparring the vampire Royland and the werewolf Cammie did before the battle.

And what about sweet Sandra, who was neither vampire or werewolf, but a human who was an expert sniper who watched everyone’s back. And Diego, the 5’6” small werewolf, who became Sandra’s boyfriend.

Wow, how about Michael near the end of the book. He was one powerful dude.

This was definitely NOT a romance, I think Diego and Sandra might have kissed 3 times, and there was nothing described in them. They kiss, that’s all. Just long enough for someone to tell them to get a room. There was no one for Valerie, which I though was a bummer.

This was an incredible story and I will read the next one. The F-Bomb was used 12 times.

As to the narrator: Kate Rudd has quickly reached my top five favorite female narrators. Her voices are wonderful and her feelings and emotions when she reads are superb.

A Sci-Fi SteamPunk Dystopian Urban Fantasy You Say

Any additional comments?

A Sci-Fi SteamPunk Dystopian Urban Fantasy You Say?

Yes that is exactly what you get with this wonderful work!
Everything from nanotechnology to airships to wastelands to vampires is in this book.
Oh, and pirates to quote the Princess Bride “killed by pirates is good.” Did I mention bar fights with werewolves, prison breaks and destroying corrupt police forces to liberate a city while defending that city from a vampire army? The are Hamletesque betrayals, drama, and assassination attempts. Those are the simple surface parts though the bigger story is about an overprotected ruler believing she was superior to others learning what leading justly with honor is in the real word. Now give all of that not to a simple narrator, or an actress, but a storyteller like Kate Rudd and you have something marvelous. Reading the book before hand left me with expectations that were exceeding in surprising wondrous ways. Small touches like the accent given to the main heroine, distinct perfect voices for every character, sound effects apparently done by this exceptional performer not only added to the suspension of disbelief they brought the book to life! After my experience with this title I cannot wait for the next audiobook in the series! I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Excellent performance!

I have read "Justice Is Calling" twice prior to the release on audio book. I really enjoyed this addition to the Kutherian Gambit world. The story is engaging and the charactors well faceted and interesting. While I enjoy reading stories I truly love a good performance by an narrator. What makes a narrator stand out is the ability to provide the different voices and emotions of the chatactors. I found this true of Kate Rudd. Nothing is more disappointing than a bland reader of a favorite story. My only concern for the audio series within the Kutherian world is if Michael's voice will be the same in all of the books he will be part of. I highly reccomend this audio book to both those who read it themselves and for those who prefers only the audio version.

Excellent reading of a fabulous story

I have enjoyed many of Michael Anderle's books now - but this is my first story by Justin Sloan. I loved it! The reading by Kate Rudd was flawless. I couldn't walk away until the story was complete. Please keep up the great work Michael, Justin, & Kate. I look forward to whatever you throw at me next.

And Michael - thank you for realizing the error of your ways and bringing the original 'Michael' back for Bethany Anne. I can't wait for them to see each other again after all this time!

A well done new series launch.

If you could sum up Justice Is Calling in three words, what would they be?

Fun action adventure

Any additional comments?

Justin Sloan launches a new series in Michael Andrele's Kutherian Gambit universe. This book was fun and fast paced. I look forward to more like this from Justin. A nice thing about this universe is once you get involved there are several authors writing at various point in the universe so there is a good deal of content to consume. I'm thrilled they are now coming out on audio book.

I had already owned this book in eBook format and followed the author on Facebook, I was offered a copy of Justice Is Calling for an honest review. I already own and have read the second book in this series and intend to purchase all the author is willing to produce.
