Publisher's summary

Six months have passed since the reappearance of the starship Phoenix - the same ship which brought humans to the world of alien atevi nearly 200 years ago, leaving a small and vulnerable colony to struggle for survival in a hostile environment. During these six months, the alien atevi have striven to reconfigure their fledgling space program in a breakneck bid to take their place in the heavens alongside humans. But the return of the Phoenix has added a frighteningly powerful third party to an already volatile situation, polarizing political factions in both human and atevi societies, and making the possibility of all-out planetary war an even more likely threat.

On the atevi mainland, human ambassador Bren Cameron, in a desperate attempt to maintain the peace, has risked alienation from his own people by communicating with the staff of the Phoenix as spokesman for the atevi, and has arranged for one human representative from the Phoenix to take up residence with him in his apartments, and for another to be stationed on Mosphiera, humanity's island enclave.

Now, Bren has the difficult task of indoctrinating Jason Graham, a young man who has never before set foot on a planet, in the intricate, delicate, and potentially lethal maneuverings of the human-atevi interface. And this at a time when, thanks to the assassination of an atevi lord who had been one of Bren's primary adversaries, and the near-collision of Bren's personal plane with a jet manned by an unknown pilot, the relationship between atevi factions is becoming more strained by the minute.

Excellent Narrarator of Book 3 in the Series!

Best of C.J Cherryh's stories of the only human allowed to interact with the atevi.

Third Time Through this Series

The narrator really makes this story come alive. His choices for pronunciation of alien names and words comes off as consistent and believable. His voice characterizations are well done. I love the story arcs.

OUTSTANDING

Any additional comments?

To describe anything gives things away - but the Dowager... she is so cool. There is so much to learn about human nature when you compare them to aliens and that is why science fiction is so powerful.

One of my favorite series

this book fits right in with the others in the series. Some important plot points set up on this book as well. One of the reasons I love CJ Cherryh's style is that you know the main character so well after reading a few books. you see him grow and change in his role, especially in later installments. There is a great balance between political intrigue and action in this book. You will understand what is motivating events and have more insight into them as well. I recommend!

High quality future history. Long may C.J. write.

A complete world development with characters who stay true to their stage and setting. I happily recommend this series

great ending to sequence 1 of these books

As I said in my review of book 2 read the review of book 1 since this is actually 1 book split into 3 books so really you have to check out the first book in each "Sequence" to get the full review.

This is the last book and although it ends this sequence you know there is more story to be told but it actually has a good ending unlike the first 2 books which were sorta cliff hangers but this one ends it properly.

this whole series is highly recommended and there are more books in the works, I started reading these books in about Feb 2014 and just finished all 5 sequences there are 15 books in total its now Oct 2014 so it took a while I only listened a few hours each day.

Excellent

Anyone who love sci-fi without a pre-designated solution. This is an awesome book and is very intriguing. No pre-determined solution will elude you. It is awesome and pink clued in a way you would not expect.

A wonderfully engaging series

Would you listen to Inheritor again? Why?

Yes, I probably will as some point

What other book might you compare Inheritor to and why?

The series reminds me of some of Robert Heinlein's work. Social Science Fiction as opposed to technology or action based science fiction. I find myself thinking of the social implications of the story.

What does Daniel Thomas May bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Daniel May's performance is wonderful. I will look for other books he has performed.

Any additional comments?

As I write this review I am 8 books into this series. I came back to write this one. And I have enjoyed them one after the other, not wishing to leave the flow of the story as it unfolds.

How much more of an endorsement can I provide? And it is hard to say exactly what it is that draw me into the story line so strongly that I have already purchased the 9th book and am eager to start it.

Half of the book, each book in the series occurs inside the head of Bren Cameron, the main character. Perhaps that is the attraction. I find myself projecting myself into his position. And I have come to care about the characters in the story and isn't that a key mark of good writing?

If you are looking for a lot of action and explosions and battles the this might not be a series for you. But if you enjoy being intellectually engaged in the story, wondering how you would respond, then you should find yourself as addicted as I am.
