Publisher's summary

Years before they became crewmates on the U.S.S. Enterprise, Commander William Riker and ship's counsellor Deanna Troi had a tempestuous love affair on her home planet of Betazed. Now, as their passions have cooled, the two serve together as close friends. Yet the memories of what passed between them linger and Riker and Troi remain Imzadi, a powerful Betazoid term that describes the enduring bond they still share. On a delicate mission involving negotiations with an aggressive race called the Sindareen, Deanna mysteriously falls ill...and dies. But her death marks the start of an incredible adventure for Riker - an adventure that takes him across time, pits him against one of his closest friends, and forces him to choose between Starfleet's strictest rule and the one he calls Imzadi.

Nior/Romance/Naked

THE BEST WAY TO DISCOURAGE YOU IS TO ENCOURAGE YOU?
The story relies heavily on the shock value of a civilization that prefers nakedness. Not sure if it is the writing or Frakes stilted narration, that makes this sound like it is a noir style story. It was not a bad book and even I can last three hours, but it is pretty costly for three hours of only so-so story. If you want to know the background on how Number One and Counselor Troi meet, than it is a must.

I loved Star Trek the Next Generation, but will hve to admit that Frakes character was my least favorite. His narration is very much like the way he played the character on the show. Each sentence is a statement and there is no flow from one sentence to another. If you loved is character for other than his looks, (which you can't see on audio), then you will love his narration.

Too Short

Any additional comments?

I would of prefered to listen to an unabriged verson of the book but it was good for an abriged verson. It would of been better if each audio chapter told what the chapter was while listing since the written book has Epilogue and middle and prolouge all over the place

Cut way down, but still pretty good

Any additional comments?

Not to bad, I guess I was very disappointed to find that this version was very cut down from the novel version, but overall still a good listen. Audio quality could have been better.

Twas OK

It was okay. I know that the story has been rated high for years by fans but it just did not do too much for me. Maybe it was the whole love story thing?

Horrible recording quality

The sound quality of this recording is horrible. Its all mid-range with no lows or highs. I had to turn the treble way up and the bass down to be able to make out the words without straining. You'd think they would put more time into this. Sorry Peter.

One of the best books in print and audio.

I first read this book in print as a teen and have listened to it, as an audiobook many times over the years.

This story explores the earlier years before, commander William Riker and counselor Deanna Troi, served on the Enterprise together.

William Riker is stationed on,Deanna Troi's, homeworld Betazed, and meets Deanna at her friend's wedding.

Hilarity ensues once,Will, realizes he must attend it in the nude. Will sees Deanna and it's love at first sight for him, even if not for her,at least not that she will admit it at the time, but later,well....

It's funny,exciting,and sad at times.

Jonathan Frakes,is a great narrator.I really love this book.

This book has all of the best, things you could hope for in a great book, movie or tv show, action, humor, love and a little sadness too.

It would have been a great,Star Trek, episode.I highly recomend it.

Lastly,I agree with several reviewers that stated, that the audio level is too low.

I have to raise the volume way up to be able to enjoy it and hear everything clearly.

I bought a used cd version of this audiobook and it also sounds too low.

Mediocre nonsense.

I am astounded by all the positive reviews. The characters are entirely OC. Riker is little more than a beast, constantly and only thinking about sex and career. The funny, ironic, playful, intelligent side of character has completely disappeared. Troi is like a child, with no notion of her own desires (the empath not being in contact with herself about something as basic as sexual attraction? On Betazed? Raised by Lwaxana? Are we joking?). All that's happening between them is poorly written sexual tension. No banter, no friendship, no dialogue. Spoilers ahead. He wants sex, she wants emotional connection and refuses sex and denies having sexual needs as he tries to conquer her, then he saves her from the bad guys and they have sex. Some reviews are so positive I expected so, so much better. The performance is the only thing this is worth listening to.

A Classic Worth Revisiting

I’m not usually a fan of abridged versions, though I see their appeal and their place. This one, however, was a favorite of mine as a young boy freshly obsessed with a franchise that would follow me and help me throughout my life. It’s a classic TNG story, and it’s always been canon to me. Frakes is wonderful, as always. His performance (especially considering that he’s Riker), gives the story an extra depth and life that the text itself, however wonderfully written, doesn’t otherwise possess. I wore the pair of cassettes this came on out back in the mid-90s, and I’m sure I’ll give this still yet another listen sometime in the future.
