Publisher's summary

With his talent for divining the future, Alex Verus should have foreseen his friends' reactions to the revelations about his previous life. Anne Walker no longer trusts him - and has also cut all ties with the mage community after getting kicked out of the apprentice program. As a favor to Luna, Alex's own apprentice and Anne's best friend, he checks in on her only to be told to leave her alone. Then Anne gets kidnapped. The Council Keepers of the Order of the Star believe that Dark mages from her past may be involved. Working with the Keepers, Alex and Luna discover that Anne has been taken into the shadow realm of Sagash, her former Dark mage mentor, and they must find a way to rescue her. But another shadow from the past has resurfaced - Alex's former master may be back in London, and Alex has no idea what his agenda is....

Another Excellent Alex Verus Novel

This is the 5th book in the Alex Verus series and fans will not be dissappointed. The book is fast paced and fun. The character development is good and you gain a lot of insight on several of the characters in the story. The author also does a good job of advancing the meta-story while simulatneously producing a story that would stand up on his own. This is definitely not a transitition book. Where many of my other favorite series are starting to lose steam the Alex Verus series containues to move on at full speed. Mr. Jacka is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and this novel is excellent proof why that is the case.

Thought it would be boring

Any additional comments?

It took me a long time to pick up the first book in this series and read it. The premise always seemed boring to me, but it is not. Jacka has created a really fun urban fantasy series. The series follows a diviner and his apprentice through various adventures. The protagonist is a moderate talent of one very specialized skill, and his intelligence keeps him alive. This is a book in which the reader is not just told the protagonist is intelligence and expected to accept it as a truly predictable story unfolds. The protagonist does demonstrate intelligence through his creativity. Give this series a try. You will enjoy it.

Another great listen!

Sometimes I find myself in a desolate wasteland while searching for new and exciting stories. Stumbling upon Alex Verus has been like finding an oasis. This story just tends to suck me in and, before I know it, 10 hours have passed and I am searching to buy the next book in the series. The tale of Alex is exciting, thought provoking, and clever and has what I feel to be a "Dr. Who'ish" type composition (I could see David Tennant staring as Alex if this were made into a series).

The narrator is top notch! Gildart Jackson really brings out the personality of each character (especially Alex and Luna) that I think I would miss had I just been reading the story.

This Author and Narrator had absolutely earned a faithful fan in me!

Five Stars

I love this series. I have read the previous books in quick succession over the past few weeks. Now I'm dragging my feet on reading the last book because I now I have a long time to wait for the next book in the series. Benedict Jacka needs to write faster!

Keep 'em coming!

I actually pre-ordered this one. After telling myself I wasn't going to do the pre-order thing.
Can't wait for the next one.

Don't be afraid to try this series. If you liked Dresden, or Nightside, I think you'll like this series.
Action, humor, good pacing, great character development.
Interesting magic system.

Sure, sounds like Dresden.
But give it a shot. I think you'll like it.
Very original after you get over the similar premise.

Another Excellent Story!

This book was wonderful. Great characters, and love Alex's inner dilemmas that he's struggling with. It makes him so relatable and intriguing. Starting book 6 today!

Wanted a little less talk and more Thunderdome

I get that Alex Verus’ Machiavellian choices have turned some of his friends off, but it feels like too many people are unable to comprehend the difference between defensive and offensive killing. There is a lot of time in this book where Sonder, Ann, etc endlessly lecture Verus about how taking any life is wrong. It worked my last nerve. Also, the second half of the book is basically about Alex and Ann. Without the full cast to riff off each other, there’s less humor and heart in the second half.

Other than those two downsides, I enjoyed the mystery of Ann’s disappearance and loved the Shadowrealm, mage Sagash and his Thunderdome-style of “research.” I also like that Alex prevails with brains instead of just his magical prowess. Victory often depends on negotiating alliances and capitalizing on information, making this a more complex story.

From here, the books drop the contained mystery-procedural side and fully commits to the slow build of the series arc of dark vs. light mages. Books 5-8 in particular are Empire Strikes Back books that will see life getting darker for Alex before he finally begins to strike back. Still mostly solid listens, but less fun than 1-4 and less action packed than 9-11 (and presumably 12, the forthcoming final book).
