Publisher's Summary

Peggy Guester is a Torch, able to see the fire burning in each person's heart. Her power is so great that she can follow the paths of each person's future and know their most intimate secrets. From the moment of Alvin's birth, when the Unmaker first strove to kill him, he has been protected by her. Now they are married, and Peggy is part of Alvin's heart as well as his life. But their destinies have torn them apart: Alvin has gone North to New England, where knacks are considered witchcraft and their use is punished with death; on a quest for world peace, Peggy has gone south to the British Crown Colonies and the court of King Arthur Stuart. There she waits in exile, her life at risk in the hands of Alvin's younger brother Calvin, who has no intentions of showing her any brotherly love. This is the fifth installment of the Tales of Alvin Maker.

Poor Abridgement

I love Orson Scott Card's works and I have very much enjoyed the Alvin Maker series. However, I ran into a road block when I could not locate Heartfire in the unabridged format on Audible. The narration is good (I love Nana Visitor), but the story has been butchered. It does not flow well from the previous books (gives you the feeling of just being dropped right in) and leaves out a great deal of the story line (which I discovered upon listening to the subsequent books when I kept going "huh...when did THAT happen?").

Wait for the Rerecord!

While Mr. Card's novel are always well-written, thought-provoking, and downright enjoyable, this audio version of Heartfire is of such poor quality that I turned it off 30 minutes into it. The sound quality is horrible; the narrator boring. My advice: Save your money and wait for the rerecord.
