Publisher's summary

Some things are better off forgotten.

Sheriff Hayden Duke was born on the Pilgrim, and he expects to die on the Pilgrim, like his father, and his father before him.

That's the way things are on a generation starship centuries from home. He's never questioned it. Never thought about it. And why bother? Access points to the ship's controls are sealed, the systems that guide her automated and out of reach. It isn't perfect, but he has all he needs to be content.

Until a malfunction forces his engineer wife to the edge of the habitable zone to inspect the damage.

Until she contacts him, breathless and terrified, to tell him she found a body, and it doesn't belong to anyone on board.

Until he arrives at the scene and discovers both his wife and the body are gone.

The only clue? A bloody handprint beneath a hatch that hasn't opened in hundreds of years.

Until now.

New narrator needed

The overall story was very good however, the narrator made it hard to listen to. Character voices were horrible. Not going to purchase book 2. This book/story needs a better narrator.

Surprise

Well I didn’t see that coming..... I love when a book surprises me with a twist. I predicted something very different happening. Not a perfect story, but it left not wanting to stop listening and to me that is when I know it was worth the credit.

Great beginning

This book involves a sheriff who discovers that his whole world is not as he as been taught. He begins a quest to recover his wife when she is abducted and finds that the people in charge do not want him to know about the world.

He is taught that he is on a spacecraft on the way to a new destination; but it turns out that there are secrets within secrets that people will kill to keep.

The narration is great the the story line keeps you in suspense the entire story.

Very good book.

The book starts out slow but then takes off like a rocket. Main character is excellent. The bad guys are ruthless. Combine those two elements with sci-fi and you have a great audio book!

Surprised

At first I thought it was going to be a police thriller. Then I thought it was going to be a monster story. It turned out to be much more. I have already downloaded the next in the series. Well done.

Not recommended

To dark, No let up just one crisis after another. A depressing story with no light in sight.

Can’t wait for the next one!

I bought this book on a whim, as I thought the story seemed like it would hold my interest. And it did. I can’t wait for the next book to be released on Audible! Their was plenty of action, and the narrator was very good!

Adequate and entertaining apocalypse

Concept has good potential. Protagonist is hard to cheer for because a real person would never be so impulsive and rely on luck . This is more of a symptom of lazy writing and echoes of 80's story road warrior. Premise is unique.

Fooled me at the end

For much of the novel I had thought this was a story very similar to Nicholas Sansbury Smith's Hell Divers series and it wasn't until near the end that a major twist changed that perception.

M.R. Forbes is one of my favorite authors but there was something about the writing style on this one that seemed rather stale compared to his other work. The primary protagonist was not a very compelling and somewhat of a loose cannon when confronted with obstacles. Furthermore, most of the other characters seemed more NPC types with little substantive backstory.

Jonathan Davis narration was difficult to follow with often being more jarring and melodramatic than the scenes really warranted.

Even so, as I mentioned earlier, the ending was exciting enough to convince me to continue on with the series.
