Fear to Tread feels like it just drags on due to a ton of preamble and trying to fit a ton of politics in between, but the payoff is good and the authors version of warp influences were fairly well executed. Sanguinius is a very human character for a demigod, consistently plagued with doubt at his flaws, real and perceived, how they effect his sons and how his father may interpret them should they come to light, this makes for a different narrative than your average 40k/30k novel which fits in well as we learn how and why Sanguinius makes it to his inevitable and dreadful meeting with Horus at Terra.
The story itself is amazing. The narrator is also usually very good but how he chose to portray nearly every character was so jarring it pulled me out of the story and killed the immersion like a bolt shell to the head. He made some of my favourite HH characters sound like toffee nosed snobs out fox hunting with their hounds, rather than the superhuman lords of war they are supposed to be. He gave the great angel Sanguinius a weird quavering drone like some stereotypical old lord of the manor speaking to “the poor”.
If it wasn’t for the fact I enjoy the story so much I’d have given it 1 star.
Still wasn’t as bad as outcast dead though.
epic listen and well read. if it wasnt for the free credit i still would of paid full price for it.
