Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Anne Bishop returns to her world of the Others, as humans struggle to survive in the shadow of shape-shifters and vampires far more powerful than themselves….

After a human uprising was brutally put down by the Elders - a primitive and lethal form of the Others - the few cities left under human control are far-flung. And the people within them now know to fear the no man's land beyond their borders - and the darkness....

As some communities struggle to rebuild, Lakeside Courtyard has emerged relatively unscathed, though Simon Wolfgard, its wolf shifter leader, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn must work with the human pack to maintain the fragile peace. But all their efforts are threatened when Lieutenant Montgomery's shady brother arrives, looking for a free ride and easy pickings.

With the humans on guard against one of their own, tensions rise, drawing the attention of the Elders, who are curious about the effect such an insignificant predator can have on a pack. But Meg knows the dangers, for she has seen in the cards how it will all end: with her standing beside a grave.

Best book of this series so far!!

I would recommend this book to anyone that loves Anne Bishop's work. She has the most wonderful imagination and the ability to make you a part of whatever world she's created!! The characters are awesome. Can't really tell details of the book since this is the 5th in this series. I am eagerly awaiting more!!!

Is it really over??

I have enjoyed this series almost beyond words. The characters, the culture, the politics, everything. It has been more than a wonderful read.

I can say that it has one of the best endings I have ever read. It was totally satisfying...and yet I wish there was more. Ms. Harris' narration was as perfect as I have come to expect.

It is very rare to find a series where the final installment is as good or better than the first book. Ms. Bishop has accomplished that with this series.

The review guidelines ask "What is the most memorable moment?" Well, there are so many! But, for me it has to be the dinner with Twylla and Skippy. In that short scene you see how Monty became the man he is and how he was able to accomplish what he needed to do in this story. Bravo Ms. Bishop!

Thank you for a wonderful good read.

Great story

The story is great, even the awkward narration can't take away from the d dark themes and character growth of the story. Definitely worth a credit. 🙂

AWESOME

This series deserves 10 stars. This book however, deserves 8 stars. Although I love the main characters and the world that they live in, I'm a bit insulted by the storyline created for Montgomery Burns. His family drama is a stereotype that shouldn't be perpetuated or dramatized. As the family of color in the book, it would have been nice to see them portrayed as a successful and functional family that could depend on each other. Instead, Anne Bishop chose to portray Jimmy is a lazy good for nothing man who only cared for himself. Twyla is a strong parental figure, but her defining characteristic is that of a cold disciplinarian. Monty's sister is weak and makes bad decisions. Finally, Monty is the glue holding this dysfunctional pack together. The book loses some of it's charm because the focus is mainly on how the sole Black family fits into the community and not Meg's and Simon's budding relationship. However, Ms. Bishop scores bonus points for developing Skippy more as a character, Meg's humorous relationship with the Elders and the overall world that established the series. I love this series and forgive Ms Bishop for all of the cringeworthy scenes involving Jimmy. This is the second time I have read this book and still find the themes relevant. This series still remains in my top 5 of urban fantasy books.

Good conclusion

This was a really good conclusion to the series. Bishop's storytelling was spot on and I was definitely invested in the story.

There were some loose ends I'm hoping will eventually be tied up either in Lakeside or another community.

Narrator was still spot on.

Great Ending

I enjoy the fact that this author will end a series. Even though I am sad that it ended I believe the author did a great job of summing up everyone in Lakeside. You were not left wondering what will happen to certain character that you put your reading time into. While I would have liked to see a bit more with Meg and Simon I realize that the ending was perfect for their characters. Overall I still love this series and am happy that there are spin off books of this land.
