Publisher's Summary

Resilient, kickass, and determined, Aislinn's walled herself off from anything that might make her feel again. Until a wolf picks her for a bond mate and a Celtic god rises out of legend to claim her for his own.
Aislinn Lenear lost her anthropologist father high in the Bolivian Andes. Her mother, crazy with grief that muted her magic, was marched into a radioactive vortex by dark creatures and killed. Three years later, stripped of every illusion that ever comforted her, 22-year-old Aislinn is one resilient, kickass woman with a take-no-prisoners attitude. In a world turned upside down, where virtually nothing familiar is left, she's conscripted to fight the dark gods responsible for her father's death. Battling evil on her own terms, Aislinn walls herself off from anything that might make her feel again in this compelling dystopian urban fantasy.
Fionn MacCumhaill, Celtic god of wisdom, protection, and divination, has been laying low since the dark gods stormed Earth. He and his fellow Celts decided to wait them out. After all, three years is nothing compared to their long lives. On a clear winter day, Aislinn walks into his life and suddenly all bets are off. Awed by her courage, he stakes his claim to her and to an Earth he's willing to fight for.
Aislinn's not so easily convinced. Fionn's one gorgeous man, but she has a world to save. Emotional entanglements will only get in her way. Letting a wolf into her life was hard. Letting love in may well prove impossible.

definitely need to pick up the second book

So this is a tough one, and while there are no big spoilers….there may be some small ones ahead…..I did not care for this story at all in the beginning, Aislinn was not a kick ass heroine, I found her to be kinda whiny and not very likable….because of how it started out with Aislinn by the time we get close to the 30ish % mark when she started to come into her magic, I had a hard time buying it, she was changing to quickly and it did not really fit with how she (her personality/attitude) was initially presented to the reader/listener. Then she was starting to become likeable and would lapse into the whiney person we met. It was not until about halfway through the story that I actually started liking it.

So from the halfway point the story was more engaging and Aislinn became a much more likeable person for me, and she is starting to become the kick ass person the book blurb describes her as. She is coming into her magic and discovering that she can do more. Fionn, the Celtic God of wisdom, protection and divination hooks up with Aislinn and while they have a rocky start they seem to work it out. I’m not sure how I feel about Fionn while he was likeable there seemed to be something missing from his character….not sure if something was lost in the narration versus reading. As we are introduced to some of the other Celtic Gods that are still around, it me wonder that if the Celtic Gods are still around what about the other pantheons and why not try to get them involved…..I guess I need to keep reading to find out. While I did end up liking this at the end, it did end on a cliff hanger so definitely need to pick up the second book to see what happens next, but the second book will be a “make it or break it” read for me.

The narrator Caroline McLaughlin, is a new to me narrator and while I think she did a good job there were points of the story where the narration seemed off and a bit disjointed….not sure if it was how she was trying to convey the emotion of the situation or not but that aside the characters were easily distinguishable and she did good on the voices.

Intense journey by a fierce character

Enjoyed this book and the believable characters populating it. The journey has quite a few twists and turns and I hope to listen to the rest of the series.
