Outbreak - Day One

Like a fragile house of cards in a hurricane, Presidents, Premiers, entire governments and their ruling bodies disappeared instantly. Some had ensconced themselves in deep underground bunkers or remained holed up in fortified strongholds, but history would tell that most had been swallowed up by the dead - never to be heard from again.

On that last normal Saturday in July, while an unknown virus indiscriminately wreaks destruction and death to all four points of the compass - a chain of events at a rally in a downtown square gets Duncan Winters to thinking that Portland, Oregon may not be immune to the quickly spreading carnage.

But seeing is not believing until that initial veil of normalcy bias - a person's natural tendency to underestimate both the possibility of a disaster and its possible effects - is lifted and long-dormant survival instincts forged and honed in Vietnam begin to awaken within him.

Two things happened when I read this book..

I realized the following two statements were overused...

1) two things happened simultaneously
2)excessive and distracting overuse of ‘former and latter’

Good read if you can ignore those things lol - thanks for another good book sir!

Good story, but.....

This should have been the book just before or just after book 1 (.5 or 1.5?). It tells a good and compelling story about Duncan Winters and where he was on the day the apocalypse began. It even fills in some of his past and how he came to be in Portland that day. Being placed in the series as book 10 didn't make any sense to me though. I highly recommend it as a read/listen as it is just as good as the rest of the series.

Best Book Of The Series

Shawn follows Duncan Winters and perfectly captures the start of the zombie out break. The story is VERY intense and well written. It reads like a main stream block buster movie.
This is what Fear The Walking Dead season one should have been.

Great book.

Duncans story

This book can be skipped. Its just Duncan's story of him getting out of the city up to the point where the cop gets his head blown off from the 1st book.

Amazing book

When I first stumbled across this series, it was a diamond in the rough. I am truly ad to have stuck out the rough as the author found their footing & then ground in for the long haul. When Duncan was first introduced, he was one of those rough characters who became more defined & realistic as the story continued on. I love that in giving us this tale dedicated solely to Duncan & his life at the time of Omega's outbreak up to the point he meets up with the main group, the author has gone back in time to introduce Duncan as he truly should have been at first. I truly am happy to have hung in there with this author as it did get off to a rough but stable start to now I'm literally biting my nails wanting to know more about what's going to happen. Especially in waiting for the first inevitable encounter with either the Chinese or Russians. Looking forward to lots more

I really enjoyed Duncan's story!

I enjoyed Duncans story. I like when ppl r battling zombies & not other ppl which most zombie stories tend to lean to now a days its why I stopped watching W.D... That said I do wish there had been more zombie killing instead of what ol' Duncan was doing every second.. he could have witnessed more zombie kills or helped more ppl. get away frm zombies... I was also thrilled that I didn't listen too "simultaneously" every other sentence! That drove me nuts in the other stories... I did enjoy the story need more guts tho!! haha

Back Stories are Awesome.

You're reading a great series of books. You love this one character that shows up. You become familiar with him but want to know where did he come from, how did he get here, what shaped his destiny. This book tells the story of Duncan, gruff old loveable Duncan and how he came to meet up with Cade Grayson and the rest is history so to speak. A very enjoyable book, great narration by Adam Paul and a wonderful tie in to the STZA series.
