Publisher's Summary

The great cataclysm wiped almost all life from the face of planet Earth, but tiny pockets of survivors crawled from the ashes, with only one thought: survival, at any cost. But not all survivors were human. In the dark, militant society that has risen in the aftermath, vampires, once thought to be mythical, have been assimilated and enslaved. Used for blood sport their lives are allowed to continue only for the entertainment of the masses. Reviled as savages, they are destined to serve out their immortal lives in the arena, as gladiators. And there is no greater gladiator than Mira: undefeated, uncompromising... and seemingly unbreakable. When an escape attempt leads Mira into the path of Lucian Stavros, the city's Regent, her destiny is changed forever. Lucian, raised in a culture which both reviles and celebrates the savagery and inhumanity of vampires, finds Mira as intriguing as she is brash. An impulsive decision - to become Mira's patron changes more than just Lucian's perception about vampire kind. The course of his life is altered in ways he could never have predicted - a life that is suddenly as expendable as hers. Can Mira prove to Lucian that all is not as it seems? Can Lucian escape centuries of lies, bloodshed, and propaganda to see the truth? Or will the supreme power of the human overlords destroy them both?

I have no problem with a strong female character, matter of fact, I prefer them. I do find it highly unlikely that a back talking, loud mouth, trouble maker would be tolerated as a slave. Her owner and several others have her life in their hands at all times, yet she can not control her mouth. They try to say, because she is a great warrior and makes money for her owner in the gladiator ring, she is able to be as mouthy as she wants. As mouthy as a modern teenager in a modern YA novel. I did not buy it and that ruined the story for me. Also, I believe that silver is a problem for werewolves not vampires.

Anyways, this is a B- story.

Love this series!!

I read this book some time ago, and have just now had the opportunity to listen to this audio book version.
As you read a book, in your mind you add the inflections and accents you would envision the author to have used. In this audio book I felt that I was so way off! Listening to this was as reading a completely different story, a better one than I had imagined. I was laughing so hard at the performance of Olivia. She's such a heifer! To hear that performed so perfectly was amazing!!
Here is also my original review of the story itself-
You always read the stories where the vampires are the top of the chain, alpha in existence... well this series shows how the vampires are now held captive, forced to fight in gladiator matches most often times to the death- all for the fun of humans.
Mira is one of the best- if not the best and she is determined to break free!
She makes an unlikely friend in this book and things get interesting!
It's exactly what you think might happen if the end of the world were to come and the vampires are caught in a bad way!
Get yours TODAY and see what trouble Mira's sassy attitude gets her in!
